Voice coaches, radio, everything. Voiceover
another day, another dollar. Let's go. Uh, my name is Marissa. Welcome back at it here to a brand new episode of Voice Coaches Radio. And, uh, as we maneuver this day, I just wanna let you know, uh, I have been battling a. Something, I don't know. Everybody's sick right now and like, not exactly how I wanted to start my new year.
Right. But, but here we are. I'm starting it strong. I took a COVID test and that was clean, so, you know, felt okay about that. But like two weeks in or like whatever, like I'm still. It's lingering. And, um, you know, if at any point my voice cuts out, I'll be over here with my singer spray, uh, cringing, having to use it because it's disgusting, but also, you know, allowing me to be able to, to talk at you, uh, without, uh, without having to, to squeak in your ears.
Uh, that's my goal. A great, great way to have a New Year's goal here, right? Uh, but you know. We're in this new year. We have new things that we wanna have on our plate and we wanna go ahead and we wanna attack it with some force and some fierce. And I get that. And I guess like just this past Monday on the 13th, it was considered like, make your dreams come true day.
Like how fitting right. You know, we start this new year and we have so many goals and so many things and aspirations that we wanna achieve, but it can be super, super challenging. Um, so. You know, I think what's crazy to think about knowing that just last year and I, you know, we celebrated a little bit here on the pod, is that like, I celebrated 20 years of doing this stuff, and I just remember being, I mean, not even a teenager at that point.
I was 20 I think when I started. Um, and yeah, I, I mean just being who I was in that moment and, and wondering like how. How can I achieve this goal? Like, what do I have to do? Like, how am I gonna ever make this happen if I am the one that keeps, like thinking I can't, you know, and, and how, oh God, how relatable is that?
Right? How often do we feel that way about ourselves? Like, oh God, you know, I would love to, but I just, I don't think I have the ability to, or we think we do for a moment, and then we just like completely talk ourselves out of it. Right? And that is just, it's a horrible way to be, but that's who we are as people.
So. I want you to think about this, right? You're, you've got this new year. I don't wanna say you've got a new you 'cause it's just, it's the same you, it's just making maybe some, some better choices for yourself. What is the big goal? What would you love to be able to reach to? How can we get you there? And I think that's, that's the best way to go about things.
Now if I, again, if I look back and I go back 20 years, oh God, it's gonna be 21 years, uh, later this year, which is, ugh, gross. Uh, but you know, when I look back at that 20-year-old kid who, I mean, I had just graduated college for fine arts. I didn't know what the heck to do with it. I always wanted to do stuff like this, and.
I think I made some smart choices already as I was getting ready to graduate. You know, I was in that process of, of making myself full-time at this college and it was like, alright, you know, this is my time that I can choose some classes to, to benefit me, but also to like. Make me happy. Like do the things that I wanna do for a change and not the stuff they're forcing me to do.
Like, I didn't wanna take art history. I didn't care. I just wanted to paint and like take photos. Uh, you know, but I was forced to take certain things, biology, like I had no use for that whatsoever in life. But Sure. No, make me take it twice. That's fine. Um, so I, I did like, I like really did explore trying to do public speaking.
And they like instantly shot me down. Um, you know, I've told that story before, like, they were like, it's not part of your curriculum. I'm like, how is it not? Uh, you know, that's stupid. Uh, especially given, hi, look what I've done now for 20 years. Um, and it's just insane. But that being said, I was like, well, my creative brain was like, well, what's the next best thing?
Like, what's gonna get me in front of people and, and allow me to, to get more comfortable with it acting. So that's what I did. I took, I took acting one. That was the, the first step. And can I tell you? I was excited because it was something I always wanted to do. I always wanted to be able to act. I remember being a kid and even saying that to my mom and like, you know, I, I, I hear in order to do something like that, you gotta get an agent and you know, you, you gotta go ahead and you gotta get to auditions and we live.
Rather close to New York City, like maybe we could do something and she just like, that was just not gonna happen. Um, again, this also goes back to the fact that I was very shy and she was well aware of that, but you know, it was always in the back of my head. So very excited to take that class and. Still very scared at the same time.
And I just had the wrong teacher for class one or that, that whole, you know, acting one because at one point, like she was trying, she, I, I think she saw something in me and she knew that there was a spark there and that, that I needed to be able to explore it. But at the same time, like I was holding myself back.
So she tried to really push me one class and, um, it happened to be like. I got stuck with somebody as a partner who ended up dropping the class and then she wanted me to like perform this skit on stage without anybody. And I'm like, but there's somebody else that's supposed, I couldn't even practice 'cause I didn't have a partner anymore.
And uh, so she got up on stage with me and boy, I mean, she was like laying into me as we were doing this. And I did I start to cry? Yeah. 'cause I was a vulnerable little, like 19, 20-year-old. Um, so. But that in that moment it didn't, it didn't scare me enough to not come back. Like I, I stuck it out and, and I got a standing ovation at one point in that course and then I went and I took acting two.
Um, and, uh, I ended up taking like a television production class 'cause I wanted to see some of the behind the scenes stuff as well and get my hands on on that and get in front of a camera a little bit and get more comfortable with that. And, and this is what I'm getting at is like. Even though I was scared, just like you might be scared right now, I took some steps outside my comfort zone so I could stop being so scared because that's what you've gotta do, you know, as, as hard as it can be.
And you know, I realized, you know, some people come to us or you're getting into this and maybe, maybe you're a little bit older. Maybe you're like heading towards retirement age and you're trying to explore this, and it just seems even that much more frightening because of the age. But like, don't let yourself get in your own way with that.
Okay. 'cause you really can do whatever you want, but we have to start getting ourselves out of our comfort zone to get to where we wanna be. And, and that is how, how I was doing it, you know, it's like these are little steps in reality. It's something that 15-year-old Marissa wouldn't have done. I would've loved to, I took a tv, um, or video course or whatever in high school and I just stayed in my, my shy shell and, and I don't even know, I think my teacher passed me just because to get me outta there.
Uh, but, you know, then I got to college and I'm like, I've got, if I'm gonna do anything that I wanna do, I've gotta like, I gotta do it myself. Like nobody else is gonna do this for me. So. You know, think about what you want to achieve and what are the first kind of small steps to get there. And maybe it is a matter of just like, even before you take a course in trying to, to be like a, a voice actor, you know, and trying to be able to be more of yourself in a script.
It, it might be a matter of just. Trying out some, some like local workshop that you have just to test the waters a little bit. Maybe get in front of some of your friends and, and just try out some of this stuff and, and don't be afraid to, to not be laughed at, but laugh with, uh, you know, 'cause like there's only one way to rip a bandaid and, and sometimes it, it takes the people that you're closest with to help you.
But you know, right now, as we go into this, this new year. Just a couple weeks in. You got the whole year now to make some really great things happen. And, uh, you know, I think that really it is just, it's the, it's the amount of effort that you're gonna put in that is going to change things for you for the better.
So. You know, it's like we can go back and almost look at this like Santa Claus, right? It's like, make a list, check it twice and see how you can go ahead and, and start making some nice moves for yourself. Uh, but you got goals, you've got resolutions to, to go ahead and make happen. You're the only one that can make them happen.
Alright? So just hold yourself accountable and, and, you know, reach for the attainable stuff to get to the bigger stuff. Um, and if you've got anything that you ever want us to chat about here. Very easily accessible. All right, [email protected]. [email protected] and uh, a brand new episode is gonna be coming your way next week.
