Voice Coaches Radio #518 – Structure and Action
Voice coaches, radio, everything voiceover. Welcome back to a brand new episode of voice coaches radio. My name is Marissa here. We are just a couple of days away from Valentine's day. So I kind of feel like, should I, should I ask you to be my Valentine? I mean, would you. Oh my goodness. Uh, I mean, as a single girl, we all like to be pampered.
I'm not going to lie. You know, flowers, candy. I'm not opposed to it. You can send it to voice coaches, the studios here in Albany. I'll gladly take whatever you want to send. I won't tell anybody that I asked you to send it. Uh, but no, seriously, you don't have to send anything. Uh, also that might be a little weird and I don't need you to be.
weird with me, but, uh, I will say this. If you do enjoy the holiday, this Hallmark holiday, then go ahead, celebrate it for what it is and, uh, and yeah, spread the love. I feel like we should be spreading the love every day and not, not the germs. Hello, pandemic. We see you. Uh, but, you know, here we are. We've been.
Now, I mean, two and a half months into the year and this is the time of the year where like a lot of people are looking for that fresh start. We've got a lot of students who may have wrapped up demos at the end of 2021 and you know, they're just getting that final product and you know, they're thinking about how can I get myself started.
Life is busy, let's face it, right? You know, back in At the beginning of 2020, you know, everybody was going full force. It was like, you know, we're going a million miles an hour. And then we all came to that screeching halt, March of 2020, when we all ended up having to get in lockdown. And as I was starting here at Voice Coaches, you know, things began to open up again.
And we didn't just go from like zero to 60, we went from like zero to, I don't know, 120. Like it was crazy how much busier we all seem to be. And that can feel very challenging, let's face it. You know, that's, that's a hard thing to wrap your head around as that's beginning. And I did notice with a lot of people, like they were struggling with that in a lot of different ways.
You know, because again, you go from so, so much of nothing to so much of everything and just how do you, how do you get that structure back into your life? And how do you get that structure back into your life and start something new for you? That's a challenge for sure. But this is what I'm going to suggest, because what I've always done.
I, you know, I've always prided myself on time management skills and being able to have that kind of to do list for myself and, and reach those goals that I've set out, but it takes hard work. It takes, it takes that structure. So what I always do is I look at my day. And my days, you know, they vary depending on teaching schedule.
They vary based on, uh, anything. I mean, life, right? I mean, doctor appointments, we all have those based on social life, because I mean, face it, we, we all need that for our own mental health and wellbeing. So it's like, you've got to go ahead and see which, what each day is bringing to you and. And you know you best.
If you've listened to this podcast at any point over the course of the last year, you know very well that I should not be recording anything in the morning. Uh, you know, so I know that about me. My voice does not wake up right away. It's very, very much reality. I know that about myself. So I try to plan for that.
You know, I, I get some prep done in the mornings at times and I allow myself to wake up before I go and I do any of the recording that I have to do. But. And that being said, if you're somebody who is just trying to figure out how to get yourself up off the ground in this industry, the best thing that you can do for yourself is stop talking about it, stop thinking about it and start doing it.
Look at your schedule, figure out when is a good time that I can spend 10, 15, 20, maybe 30 minutes every so often, a couple times a week to go ahead and. Sit down and, and really start investigating how I can start approaching this, who I can start reaching out to, maybe there's people already in your inner circle that could utilize you that you just really haven't told that you're doing this yet.
Uh, it's always good. to create that plan of action for yourself. But the only way that you can do that is if you set the time aside to do it. And you know, again, we're all different and every day might be different. And yes, there are going to be wrenches that get thrown into your plans. We all have that happen, whether it's technology issues or somebody gets sick or you get sick or, you know, something happens at work and you got to stay late and it's like, Oh, that cuts into my time, but you just have to plan for it.
And, and just. At least set that side, that, that time aside in your schedule so you know, this is my plan. This is what I want to do and set yourself that goal to, to actually do it. If things pop up, things pop up. I mean, that's just life. The best thing that you can do is not just plan for it, but then actually go ahead.
And, and set that time aside and do it, uh, because we get, it's like anything else. I mean, how many people have you seen that go and they, they talk about the fact that they want to lose weight? Oh God, I want to lose 10, 15, 30 pounds, you know? And then they talk about it all the time and they're there, they are posting another post on social media about how they have to lose weight, but they're sitting on the couch and they're binge watching, you know, the entourage or something, uh, you know, it's like you've You've got to stop talking.
You've got to start doing the action behind everything is where, is what gets you to where you want to go. Had I, again, had I sat back and not done anything in 2020, I don't think I would be where I am right now. Uh, you know, back then, it's like, I didn't have a radio station to be on. I didn't have any voice work coming my way.
Instead, I just utilized what I had, which was social media. Going back to that. You know, because it can be very beneficial at times. As frustrating as it can also be. But I have like 6, 000 people on my radio Facebook. So, while everybody else was just as bored as I was. I created a little show for myself.
Every Thursday I did a trivia thing on my Facebook page and I had people tuning in from all over. In fact, there was a guy from Australia that was watching one night and I was like, what is happening? Like, I know this is a worldwide global pandemic, but this is crazy. Uh, but you just never know who's watching.
Uh, you never know who's watching what you're doing. Um, and for me, you know, that was what. And I had built, built relationships with over the course of my career were watching and the moment that they had an opportunity to utilize me, I was already top of mind because I made myself top of mind. So it's just a matter of you creating those goals for yourself, creating a plan of action and, and keeping, keeping consistent with it and, and, you know, having that action behind what you're saying.
Because if you don't. I mean, how could we possibly get anywhere, you know? So the best thing you can do for yourself is in this moment, look at your schedule, see what makes the most sense for you. Start small, start with just 10 minutes a day, you know, 10 minutes every couple of days, even, um, and, and grow it from there.
But. The more that you start putting into this new chapter for yourself, the easier and maybe quicker you can actually get up and, and started with it. So keep, keep consistent and put that action behind what you're saying. And all of a sudden your world is going to change for the better. So we're going to have another brand new episode of Voice Coaches Radio coming your way, coming up next week.
