Voice Coaches Radio #460 – 3…2…1…Happy New Year!!
Voice Coaches Radio. Everything voiceover. And welcome to this week's edition of Voice Coaches Radio. I am Josh Heller. Delighted to have you joining me as we are each and every week. Coming to you live from Albany, New York at the White Lake Music and Post Studios. The mothership for Voice Coaches Radio.
So, uh, it, it, Again, you know, last week we, uh, we had our special Christmas episode. Hopefully you enjoyed it. The fact that you actually listened to me singing the, uh, uh, the, the 12 days of Christmas variation and are still back listening to this episode is, uh, well, I appreciate that. You had every right to, uh, to not do that.
Every right to be like, I'm never listening to this guy again. And I would understand. I would. I would understand, but you're back and I appreciate that. So, uh, last week's episode fell on Christmas day and this week's episode falls on new year's day and that's right. It is new year's day. It is January the 1st, 2021 and what a year 2020 has been. It's been, uh, it's been, yeah, it's been, uh, So it's been a year. That's for sure. That is, uh, that is for sure. Um, hopefully everyone, uh, you know, is, is doing alright, is, is celebrating the holidays, uh, you know, responsibly, is being smart, and, uh, is taking care of themselves, and, uh, and, you know, and their loved ones, um, you know, obviously during this, uh, this time of year.
It, it has been, it's been some kind of year. Uh, and it has finally come to a close. So, again, if you are, uh, listening to this on the day that it dropped, it is New Year's. And, uh, with New Year's Day, what do we normally do? We, you know, normally do the New Year's Resolutions. And I'm gonna be honest with you, my New Year's Resolutions this year, they're the same as they were last year.
They're the same as they were two years ago. Essentially. Right? They are, right? I wanna get in better shape. I want to, uh, to eat better. I want to, um, You know, uh, uh, do more marketing for my, my, my voiceover work. I, I want to, uh, you know, spend more time, uh, practicing that. Uh, that's what it is every year.
But that's an interesting thing, right? It's what it is every year because most people don't follow up. on their goals. They do not follow through. In fact, over 50% of people give up on their goals before January 31st. We don't even make it a month. We don't even make it a month. I read an interesting article that, uh, that I wanted to put out there, and it basically was, are resolutions just another form of procrastination?
Right? Are resolutions just another form of procrastination? Procrastination. That's an interesting kind of idea, isn't it? That, you know, these resolutions, we think we're, you know, we're taking the bull by the horns here. We think, you know, we're, we're finally doing this. We're making changes. We're being positive.
We are, you know, we're, we're, we're doing finally. And really, it's just kind of an excuse to not do stuff for a while, right? Through all of November and December, I knew what my resolutions were going to be. I didn't start them. Because of course I was gonna wait and start them on January 1st, right? When the New Year started.
That's two months! That's two months that I did nothing! Right? Two months that I did nothing because I was quote unquote, uh, waiting for my New Year's resolution. Well, you know what? That's not good enough. That's not good enough. Right? We need to stop procrastinating and we need to do things. We need to go out there and do things.
That's what we're here to do, right? Obviously, those things, specifically right now, referring to the, the voiceover field, but whatever, it could be anything, right? It could be anything. We need to do things. We need to get aggressive. We need to go out there. We need to grab it. We all want to do this. You guys are listening to this podcast right now because this is something you want to do.
Right, you're listening to this podcast right now because these are things that, you know, you want to pursue, you, you continue to want to, to work on and, and be successful in. And, and that's, and that's an admirable thing. But we need to do it. Right, we need to do it. We can't be one of those 50% of people that, you know, uh, give up.
By the end of the month. By the end of the month. Don't even last a month. Right? Think about that. Don't even last a month. And I'm no better. I'm no better. I, I, I specifically made a point to tell you guys that my, my resolutions this year are the same as they were last year. They're the same as they were two years ago.
Because you know what? I did not follow through on them. I didn't last year. I didn't the year before. And here I am sitting here another year older. Another year wiser. Not really. Um, hypothetically another year wiser. But. In the same boat. In the same boat as I was a year ago. It's ridiculous! It's the same boat I was in two years ago!
Ridiculous! Nothing has changed. I just wear a mask now. Nothing has changed. In two years. I did not follow through. Now did I make it more than a month? I'd like to think I did. But I'm not sure I did. I'm not sure I did. Right? So, Again, these New Year's resolutions, they're great, but we have to follow through on them.
We have to be consistent with them, and we just are not. Generally speaking, we just aren't, right? So that's what we need to do. So if you want to make a New Year's resolution, it's to, you know, do something. It's to do something. My New Year's resolution, you know what my New Year's resolution is this year?
It's to not have to make the same resolution next year. It's that in 365 days, when I'm making new New Year's resolutions, they're different. They're different because these ones, I actually did. These ones, I actually followed through on. That's what we have to do. That's what this is about. I don't want to sit here a year from now and make the same resolutions I'm making right now.
That's not progress. We need to make progress. We need to make progress. That's what this year is going to be about. It's going to be progress. Right, there's a quote, and I think I've said it before on this podcast. I know I've told people about it before. It's, the fear of failure will sometimes have you masking procrastination as planning.
All right. The fear of failure will sometimes have you masking procrastination as planning. Planning time is over. It's doing time. It's January 1st. It's 2021. It is doing time. This is a big year for all of us. And next year in 365 days, when we are sitting in these same spots and we are having these same conversations and we are giving our resolutions, they will not under any circumstances, be the same ones that we are putting forth this year, because we're going to.
Damn well do it. How about that? I'm pointing my finger at you guys, all right? I'm trusting you. You are gonna do it this year, okay? Make those resolutions, but follow through on them. Do not allow them to just to be something that in one month from now, in 31 days, we're realizing, yeah, it never really happened.
Because you know that in 12 months from now, you're going to be saying the same thing. Man, I wish I had done that this year. But, you know, I'm going to do it in 2022. No, forget that. 2021. This is the year. 2020 has been brutal. It's been brutal. In so, so many ways, it has been brutal. But you know what? We've made it.
We've made it to 2021. And we're going to make 2021 a hell of a better year. And we're going to start on day one. We're going to start today. Listening. To this podcast, making your new year's resolutions and following through on them. You're not giving up in a month. Oh no, no, no. You're not giving up in a month.
You're not giving up in six months. You're not giving up in a year because one year from now we will sit here. We will do this podcast again. We will make our new year's resolutions on this podcast because that's what we do, but they won't be the same ones this year. They won't be the same ones as this year because we're going to follow through this year.
All right, that's my new year's resolution guys for all of you. My new year's resolution is that in one year from today when I'm giving my 2022 resolutions, they're not these ones because these ones I've actually done and I hope the same for you. I hope you all have a wonderful and safe and happy and healthy new year.
Hopefully your holidays have been great. Hopefully your family is doing well. Thank you so much for spending some time with us each and every week. All year long. I look forward to seeing what 2021 brings. Not just for us, not just for me, not just for this show, but for you guys as well. All right. So again, happy new year. Be good. Be healthy. A strong 2021 for all of us. Thanks so much for tuning in this week.
