Voice Coaches Radio Episode 720 “You’re Closer Than You Think”
John: [00:00:00] All right. Hello, my friends. I am John.
Tina: And I'm Tina.
John: And it is Voice Coaches Radio.
Tina: Radio. How about I be the- There you go ... the echo- You're like the echo ... the delay Let's go.
John: Radio.
Tina: Yeah, radio. Radio. Radio, radio. Yeah,
John: there we go. All right, so, uh, our... Oh, oh, I wanna address something. Um, we had done an episode a wa- a while back about uh, sending reads- Mm-hmm
and we would, we only had one person send us a read. Mm-hmm. So we're not gonna do the follow-up episo- episode because it would sort of be like, I'd almost feel like I would be picking on the person, right? Yeah. Just critiquing one person's- Yeah ... read. So, uh, we're not gonna do that because, uh, no one really got involved except for- Yeah
Michelle, our, our, our, our friend Michelle.
Tina: Yes.
John: Yeah.
Tina: She did. So- And that was great, and I appreciate
John: that. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I love it. Love it. Um, Michelle is a loyal listener and client here at Voice Coaches. Mm-hmm. So love it. All right, [00:01:00] so but today we're gonna do an episode called You're Closer Than You Think.
Tina: Okay.
John: For people who, and this is for people who, you know, and I, and I wanna... It's kind of piggybacking off of the episode we did called The In Between, right?
Tina: Yes.
John: Uh, where, you know, we said, "Hey, here are all the things you have to do," right? Mm-hmm. And, and I think for some people it seemed to scare them a little or maybe- Yeah
go, "Oh, wow, I have a..." So let me, I wanna talk about how you as someone who wants to get into voiceovers, right? Who many of you out there have been told you have a great voice probably- Mm-hmm. Yeah ... which is why you-
Tina: Yeah ...
John: even thought about it. Uh, and you're probably closer than you think to being a professional voice actor, someone who can make money- Mm-hmm
or does make money doing this, right? Yeah. If you do the things that you're supposed to do.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Right? So, um, yeah, like for example, i-e- I would say d- there's one order to this and one o- order only really- Mm-hmm ... if you wanna make money at this point, right? Yeah. It's education, demo, work. That is the order.
That is it. Like, that's the order. Mm-hmm. There's no really skipping [00:02:00] steps, but if you do it in the right order, like you get a voice coach, and you learn all the techniques, pitch, dynamics, timing. Mm-hmm. You learn all the things about conversational reading. You learn how to voice act. At that point, okay, you're getting close.
Yes. It's one, it's- Mm-hmm ... one step at a time. You're not as far away as you think from being able to make money doing this. It's, it's the, it's the people who don't think they need to take any steps- Mm-hmm ... they're far away.
Tina: Yes. Yeah, absolutely. They're
John: far away. Yeah. I get it all the time. Yeah. I had, I just had one, uh, the other day, who basically said, "Yeah, so I'm just gonna go make a demo."
And the person had done a read for me, and they were not good.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Let me just be clear. Now, I'm not saying they were... Very nice voice. No. Very nice voice.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: But they weren't good. Like, they didn't sound like anyone who should, who's ever done a voiceover in their life, who had never read out loud in front of anyone- Mm-hmm
except for in a classroom somewhere.
Tina: Yeah.
John: And the person's like, "Yeah, I'm just gonna, uh, just gonna do this." I'm like, "You're not though."
Tina: Yeah, no. You're,
John: you're not.
Tina: No.
John: You're very far away.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: So, but- Yeah ... for those of you who are doing it, doing it the right way, and you're [00:03:00] getting- Mm-hmm ... a voice coach, and you're learning all the things you need to learn.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: Okay? I'm talking, again, conversational reading, voice acting, learning how to go out and get work. How about that?
Tina: Yeah.
John: Uh, y- you are closer than you think to being- Mm-hmm ... someone who makes money doing this.
Tina: Yes, absolutely. It will come. That's, but I think a lot of it is patience. And I think that probably needs to be in there.
You know, you get yourself the e- the education, you get yourself the demo, and then you're, you're trying to find, find the job. Have patience with it. Yes. It will, it will come. You know, some, some people, uh, within that, that's it. They- Yep ... they just happen, right place, right time. Yeah. That's how I think of it.
Yep. But, you know, and s- but some it will take a, it will take a few minutes, but have the patience with it. But stick with it. Do not give up on it.
John: Absolutely. And that's, that's key. I like that. The, the patience because don't view it as, as how long it takes to get the job. Mm-hmm. Know that you're right there.
Tina: Yeah.
John: You'll get... It'll come when it comes, but you'll get... You will get a job. [00:04:00] Mm-hmm. Yes. Just keep plugging away, you know, once you become a professional- Mm-hmm ... and you have the demo and you're, and you've learned how to go out and get work. You're right on the edge.
Tina: Yeah.
John: You're right on the edge, and the day you give up is the day you would've gotten that job.
Tina: Yeah. That's true. That is so true. There are so many times I didn't, I have just put, you know, sit down for a day or two and just send out my demos, send out my demos, and easily could have said, "No. You know what? I'm done. I'm done. I haven't heard anything back." But I just kept at it, and I just ended up being right place, right time.
Ended up, and it just kept coming.
John: And you put yourself in the right place at the right time. Yeah. And that's a, a important distinction because I, I do have people who think luck plays a lot into it. And, and I understand why people say that- Mm-hmm ... but it's people who put themselves- Yeah ... in the right place at the right time.
It's not like you stumbled into it.
Tina: No, no. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. You just, you just have to keep at it. That is the biggest thing, and have patience. It will come. Absolutely. It will definitely come.
John: Yeah, it will. You know, listen, there, there's $4.8 billion worth of voiceover work out there right now- Mm-hmm. Yeah
annually. Um, and there's- That's a [00:05:00] lot of money. A lot, and there's a lot of people... And believe me, there are people out there right now- Uh, who are getting work and they may not be as good as you.
Tina: Yeah.
John: So you can get the... Believe me, there's different levels of voice actors, like everything else. Mm-hmm. And so, you know, d- d- like you said, just be patient, but keep plugging along.
Don't, don't poke and hope, right? Yeah, yeah. Don't sit there and go, "I hope something happens." Yeah. I hope. 'Cause that's really- Yeah ... when you do something like that, that's you hoping you're discovered. Mm-hmm. That's not real, right? So-
Tina: No ...
John: just keep doing the things you're supposed to do, that you've learned how to do.
Mm-hmm. Okay? So again, this applies to people who have done this the right way. Yes. You are so close.
Tina: Yes.
John: Don't give up. You're right there.
Tina: Yeah. And then also, don't forget to still do, do, still practice what we've taught you.
John: Yeah.
Tina: Read out loud. Do... And even just record stuff and, and whether it is, if you do this, if you have your own home studio, or just to even practice recording, record on your phone, just so that you can hear yourself back.
Yeah, just so you can hear yourself. Yeah.
John: That's
Tina: it, [00:06:00] yeah. Just, but keep at that.
John: And by the way, if you've come through us, by the way, um, and, and you could anyway, but p- especially- Mm-hmm ... people who come through us, y- you're welcome to send me some, even, like, it doesn't have to be an excellent recording. You can send me a recording from your phone.
Mm-hmm. Say, "Hey, how do you, what do you think of this?" Yeah. You know, "How do you think I'm doing on the read?" I'll, I have no problem- A delivery of
Tina: it, yeah ...
John: I have no problem emailing you back and say- Oh, yeah. Yeah ... "Hey, here's what I liked. Here's maybe what you can improve."
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: You know, um, I had, it was funny, I had someone the other day say, "I don't like the word critique."
Tina: Oh.
John: And I said, "Cool. Well, that's the word I'm gonna use."
Tina: Yeah.
John: Right?
Tina: What would be another word for it? I
John: don't know. I don't know. Yeah, I'm- Feedback. I just- Yeah, feedback ... feedback,
Tina: right? Yeah, feedback. I
John: could use that. I mean, you
Tina: know. Maybe feedback would be better. Critique does kinda sound harsh, you know.
But it
John: is critique. I'm gonna
Tina: critique you.
John: Critiquing the read. Maybe that's just me. Critique the read. That's what we're gonna do.
Tina: But I will give you some feedback. See how nice that sounds?
John: Yeah. I'm gonna stick with critique, though. I know. I, I, I can't sub- All right, I'll take feedback ... I can't subsc- I can't subscribe to the, uh, to always, you know, every time someone goes, "I [00:07:00] don't like that."
"Okay, cool. I'm changing my vocabulary at that point." Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we're not gonna do that. But, but, uh, but I g- you know, I get it. But I don't think critique is, uh... I guess everything's p- perception, right?
Tina: Mm-hmm. Perception. Yes, it is. Yeah. It is.
John: So, um, but yeah. Yeah. So yeah, I, so again, just d- keep plugging along.
Tina: Mm-hmm. Yes.
John: And, uh, don't- D- don't give up. It, it, it's a, a... I think the big thing is we, we are a society of now-
Tina: Yes, we are ...
John: because of technology. Mm-hmm. Right? There's so, so many wonderful things about technology, but there's, there's also, like, a, a, a, a downside to technology, of course, like there is to everything.
Mm-hmm. Right?
Tina: Yeah.
John: Uh, everything in life is y- you know, a balance, right? Mm-hmm. So it's the same thing with technology. Uh, you kind of have to use it for what it's good for and... But then understand that just because at a push of a button you can get any information you want now- Mm ... as opposed to grabbing books off the shelf, right?
Yeah. And having to re- Yeah ... oh, I, I need to... Encyclopedia? Ah, yeah. Who's using an [00:08:00] encyclopedia? No one. No one's, no one's going... Remember when people used to go around sell encyclopedias?
Tina: Yes. Yep. I
John: mean, no one's doing that, right? You're not making any money 'cause now you can just use Google or whatever- Yeah
search.
Tina: Yep, all you have to do- Yeah ... is put it in your search engine- Right ... and that's it.
John: But what's happened with that, and the same thing with how you get music now- Mm-hmm ... right? Yeah. A touch of a finger. Uh, we've become a society of now. I think it's kind of, uh, changed the wiring in our brain a little bit where we...
Like, when we wanna do something- Mm-hmm ... if we don't see immediate results, we go, "Ah, never mind."
Tina: We're done with it, yep.
John: But if, th- there's really nothing in life, i- in, like, day-to-day life- Mm ... not, you know, anything offline, off d- you know, not digital. There's nothing that is that quick, right? If you're gonna- Yeah
pursue anything professionally or even something that you just love- Mm-hmm ... and then maybe you can make some money on or maybe you don't, who knows? Yeah. Nothing's that quick, right? Yeah. You, you, you still have to gain the skills to be good at this. It could be... And we talked about this before. It could be a sport.
It could be anything. You [00:09:00] still have to practice- Mm-hmm ... learn how to do it. It's just how it is. Yeah. But once you start along that path- You are moments away- Mm-hmm ... from finding even just a little success.
Tina: Yes.
John: Really. I mean, and, and sometimes it's just getting over this hump, right? You know, you feel like- Yeah.
you're, "Oh, I can't. I..." You know, all of a sudden you just-
Tina: Yeah ...
John: and it's all downhill.
Tina: Yeah.
John: So don't, don't give up. That would be our message to people.
Tina: I think so. I think that's the... Yeah, don't give up. It will come. We expect that instant gratification- We do ... or that, that instant, "I sent, I just sent them through, you know, I sent them my MP3.
I sent them my demo through the email, and I haven't heard back yet." Yep. "Well, how long ago?" "I sent it 10 minutes ago." Well, you know what? They're probably doing other things and will get back, or they might not. But still, just keep going. Keep
John: doing it.
Tina: Yeah, keep
John: going. It's like that, it's like that with everything, I think.
I think it's also like that with, uh, even just going to the gym, working out, losing weight. People want it right away.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Right? People are like, "I didn't lose 50 pounds this week. Forget it." Oh,
Tina: yeah.
John: You know? And I always try to [00:10:00] tell people, like, I'm always like, "Listen, I've been in the gym for a long time.
I still look like this." Yeah. But so, uh, you know,
so- Yeah ... you know, you, you, you have to know. It... Yeah, yep. It doesn't happen right away, you know? You- Yep.
Tina: It does not happen. It does, absolutely does not happen r- right away, but you will get there. Yes. That's, it's the journey. It's- It's
John: the journey ... part of the journey. Embrace it, too. Yes. I mean, listen, you know, uh, I, I'm kind of like this with everything.
Uh, my, my wife used to tease me when, when we first met. She used to call me Fun Shine Bear because I'm always positive about everything. Mm-hmm, yeah. I was like, I like the journey itself. For me, I embrace the journey itself, and for me it's great. Yeah. Like, I'm never someone who goes, "I can't, you know, I can't wait till this comes."
I'm always like, "Oh, okay. Well, actually, I, I enjoy every day. I enjoy the whole- Yeah ... journey." So for me, it, the whole thing is cool. And, and if you can do that, then- I think you'll find that i- it won't feel like a lot of time.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: You know? Yeah. Because you're enjoying the whole process, and you should.
Tina: Yes, definitely.
Enjoy, enjoy it. Yeah. It, 'cause it is a lot of fun- Yeah ... once you start doing it.
John: Absolutely.
Tina: [00:11:00] And it will, it will start, have that domino effect. Once one comes in- Yes ... it starts to come in again, and it starts to ki- come in. Yeah. So, yeah.
John: I, I kind of relate it to, we've all had this happen. You ever have something where you're, you're, something happens to you and you, you get in a bad mood, right?
Tina: Yeah.
John: And all of a sudden you're like, you're like, "Come on." And all of a sudden things just start happening.
Tina: Yeah.
John: A lot of it has to do with the way you're, the way you're acting, right? Mm-hmm. You, you, you see things as all being negative, and all of a sudden a bunch of negative things start happening all, all at the same time.
Yeah. But if you turn that around, right? Mm-hmm. And you, and you say, "Okay, no, this is, hey, this is awesome. This journey is awesome." All of a sudden good things start to happen. It,
Tina: it, it- It
John: really
Tina: is ... it really does happen like that. Yeah. It does. And it's crazy, but it works. And- Yeah ... think positive and it will come.
John: Absolutely. Yep, so awesome. Well, there you go. See? You're closer than you think.
Tina: You are closer. You are closer. A lot closer now.
John: And, and if, for those of you who are not, who- Well ... you're just listening to this, you haven't done anything yet, don't worry. Don't worry. Listen. Yeah. Come to my voiceover webinar. I have an intro to voice acting webinar.
Mm-hmm. And you can learn all about it, and then there you [00:12:00] are. You're taking... It's all about taking steps. Yep. That's
Tina: all. Take the first step. I-
John: i- j- every time you take a step you're closer than you were before. Mm-hmm. Yep. So-
Tina: Absolutely ...
John: uh, again, uh, oh, use the- Code? ... code pod.
Tina: Okay.
John: Right? If you want 50% off the, the webinar.
If you haven't taken a webinar from me yet, you're missing out. Oh, you have to. You get to read for me at the end. Mm-hmm. Uh, for those of you who do wanna read to me at the end, it's optional of course. Mm-hmm. And, uh, so yeah. But I wanna thank everybody very much for listening. I'm John.
Tina: And I'm Tina. Oh, wait.
Oh. How do they get ahold of you?
John: Oh yeah, [email protected]. Yeah. We're getting, I am getting emails. Someone was surprised. I, we, we just talked about this. Yeah. Um, someone was surprised that... You know, I should give them a shout-out. Let me check my phone quick. I wanna-
Tina: Yeah ...
John: because we do get quite a few emails, but this one al- was, was really great.
And it was from, um, where are we, where are we? Oh, from Lee. Hmm. Lee emailed us. Mm-hmm. And then I responded, I think pretty quickly.
Tina: Yeah, you did.
John: Yeah. [00:13:00] And, and he was like, "Oh, you do, um, respond to your own emails." Yeah. I'm like, "What? Yes, I'm, uh, I don't have a team of people." So yes, and email me anytime. Anytime, Lee.
Tina: I have a team of people, I'm sorry.
John: Awesome. All right. So again, [email protected].
Tina: And [email protected].
John: We out.
Tina: And I'm Tina.
John: And it is Voice Coaches Radio.
Tina: Radio. How about I be the- There you go ... the echo- You're like the echo ... the delay Let's go.

Tina and John talk about how many aspiring voice actors are actually closer than they think to success.
