Voice Coaches Radio Episode 718 “Getting The Support You Need”
John: [00:00:00] All right, here we are. Here we
Tina: are.
John: The greatest show on earth.
Tina: It is. We are,
John: we Boys' and Girls' Radio, everybody. We're
Tina: definitely a circus.
John: Yeah. I'm John.
Tina: And I'm Tina.
John: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, so here we are. Uh, we want to talk today about, uh, getting support. Like- Mm-hmm ... and, and, you know, uh And I think this, I honestly, I think I'm, we're gonna be more talking to the people who aren't supporting people, but-
Tina: Yeah.
John: But, but, but I think I also wanna give people a boost who aren't getting the support they need- Mm-hmm ... from the people around them. I, there's a weird phenomenon I've, I've seen. Mm-hmm. And I have seen this many times, and I'm fortunate that I don't have this in my life. Mm-hmm. My partner in life, uh, my wife is, uh, very supportive of anything that I choose to do or anything, and you know- That's good.
Very supportive ... very supportive- Mm-hmm ... as, as I am to her. But there are many people out there that don't feel the support from the people closest to them. Mm-hmm. Uh, the, you know, and, and we're, again, we're talking about voiceovers here, but this isn't everything.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Where, "Oh, my [00:01:00] husband doesn't support me in this."
Oh. Or, "My, my brother, i- or my sister," they go, "What are you doing? Why are you doing this?" Yeah. Yep. "You already have a job." Uh, and so, and, and what's interesting about that is sometimes you find the support from people who aren't the closest to you- Mm-hmm ... who go, "Well, that's really cool."
Tina: Yeah.
John: And so you have to embrace that support.
I, I get it. It's, it stinks when someone that, that you- Oh,
Tina: absolutely ...
John: that's close to you doesn't support you- Yeah ... support you. But, but there are people out there who will. Mm-hmm. You know? And, and so I'm really talking to those people. Listen, support the people around you. What's happening where- Mm-hmm ... w- w- it's such an interesting, and not in a good way, a negative thing to not support the people-
Tina: Yeah
John: around you who wanna do something, better themselves, again, whether it be just to be happy-
Tina: Yeah ...
John: or to do something to maybe make a little side income, a little side hustle.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Yeah, so talk about that a little. I
Tina: mean, I think a lot of it is y- you're right, they don't ... I, you know, you just wonder why they don't support you.
But you still have to, yes, I, they don't support you. But I, in my mind, if you feel it's, this is something that you [00:02:00] wanna do, then go ahead and do it. That's where we come in, and I've had, I have a, a ton of students who lack the confidence in doing... When, one, a lot of it is because you get that background noise of people saying, "Why are you doing that?"
You know? "Is there any money in that? Why?" You know. So yes, you have that background noise, but you do have us as one, the instructors or that, or, you know, our producers. You, if we didn't think you could do this, one, we would tell you. Yeah. Right? In a nice way, I always say that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it's like, "Maybe you should try something else."
But majority of the time, you know, we're here to support you. If we think you can do this, we're gonna support you do this, you know? And, and I've got students left and right who are like, "Oh, I don't know. That doesn't sound good." You know, no, it does sound good, and, and we're gonna let you know, and we're gonna steer you in the right direction and build up that confidence, you know?
John: Absolutely. Yeah. And, and our podcast producer Clement mentioned- Mm-hmm ... that, uh, one of the reasons that maybe people don't support others is [00:03:00] they themselves have a fear- of kind of go out, going out on a limb and trying the thing they wanna do. Yeah. Whether it be voiceovers- Mm ... or, or something else. So, so when you tell them, "Hey, I'm gonna do this," they're like, "Oh, come on."
Yeah. Because they're not doing anything, right?
Tina: Yeah.
John: They're stuck in their little rut. Mm-hmm. And they're kind of doing maybe a job they don't love, and- Yeah ... and then they're paying the bills, and that's cool, but they're not gonna, they're not gonna go out on a limb and do anything new. Yeah. So, so they don't want you doing it because what happens then?
You feel weird. You're like-
Tina: Yeah ... "
John: Oh, look, she's actually achieving the things she wanted to do. I wish I did that."
Tina: Yeah, and that's too bad. I mean, it, it, you, but that, you do get that from a lot of people who don't support you. It's because of what they're going through, or maybe they just don't wanna see you be successful, and they're, you know, be like, "Oh, geez."
But I, you've gotta
John: go for it. I hope it, I always hope it's not that, right?
Tina: Yeah, no. Or- Yeah, I know. You, but you, you never know what it is. Yeah. You never know. You never know. They're
John: projecting themselves. Yes. Their self-doubt, their- Mm-hmm ... their, uh, fear onto you. Mm-hmm. Right?
Tina: Yeah.
John: And it's like, uh, and [00:04:00] I, I think I told this story before about I, I, you know, I, I don't like retelling stories.
Mm. It's hard to remember, but- Yeah. I, I told the story about my mother, who when she... So I, I don't know if I told it off-air, on-air- Yeah ... because I remember we had some issues in the beginning where- Yeah. ... we were recording and not recording. But, uh, the, the story about my mother who, who, uh, her whole life sang to me.
Beautiful voice. Mm-hmm. Sang to me as a child and, and, uh, would put me to sleep, and what a beautiful voice she had. But she worked for the state. She's, uh, uh, worked for, uh, New York State Tax and Finance.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Didn't love the job, but it was fine. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And, you know, and she, and she was at a great time in the state where when she retired, she got, you know- Yes, yes
high retirement, you know? Yep. Um, and because I got into this industry, and I became successful in- Mm-hmm ... the entertainment industry as a, as a voice actor, and then as a producer- Mm-hmm ... and a voice actor, she, when she retired, started singing everywhere she could.
Tina: Yeah.
John: I mean, she started- Nice ... singing at church, but then she started doing these singing competitions.
Mm. And she started traveling around. She went to Nashville.
Tina: Oh my goodness,
John: that's great. She went to, and she did a singing competition- Yeah ... in Nashville for her age [00:05:00] group. They had it- Yeah. ... broken up in age groups. And I think she might've won. And she- Yeah ... and she, and so she said something to me that probably the proudest moment as an adult- Mm-hmm
because you, you know, you, you learn things from your parents your whole life. Yeah. And very rarely is it vice versa, really. Mm-hmm. Right? Yeah. And my mother said, um, "You know, I just wanna thank you. The, the whole reason I'm doing this, the whole reason I am, like, kinda living my best life- Mm-hmm ... and singing all the time, something that I love doing, is because of you."
Mm-hmm. And I said, "What do you mean?" She goes, "Well, I didn't even... When, when you got into voiceovers, when you got into the entertainment industry, I really didn't even know that, first of all, that you could be successful doing it. But just the fact that you put yourself out there-"
Tina: Yeah ... "
John: and you, you went through everything you had to go through, and you became successful doing this."
Mm-hmm. 'Cause I, you know, listen, it wasn't easy-
Tina: No,
John: no. Yeah ... you know, for me. You know, you know, I was a struggling artist for a while. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And she said, "The, everything you went through, but you did the thing you loved. You just kept doing it." Mm-hmm. "Gave me the confidence to go out and do this." Oh, that's great.
Yeah, super cool.
Tina: That is so great. Oh, I love that.
John: And s- yeah. And so I, I, so- [00:06:00] I think, you know, and, and luckily she does, her husband supports her. Mm-hmm. Right? He, he loves it. Mm-hmm. He brags about her singing. Oh,
Tina: that's nice.
John: You know, he's like- Yeah. Right ... "Oh, you should hear your mom," you know? And, uh, you know, her, her- Mm
and I say her, her husband, 'cause it's not my father. Right. You know, so it's like her, her husband. I don't call him my dad. Yeah. You know. They got married when I was older. Yeah. But very supportive. Mm-hmm. And so that's, I think that's really helpful. Um, but here's what I would say to people, and I think you kinda already- Mm
said this, so I'll reiterate kind of. If you don't have the support from the people closest to you, first of all, um, maybe you need new friends. I hate to say that, but maybe you need new friends, really.
Tina: Get new friends and relatives.
John: Surround yourself- Yeah. ... with supportive people. But, but, you know, unless, I'm not saying to- Yeah
divorce your husband or- Yeah ... wife. I, I'm just saying, you know. But, but if that's not the case, if these are people you love- Yeah. Yeah ... and they just for some reason- That's, yeah ... aren't supportive of you- Mm-hmm ... with this or f- for whatever reason, find support-
Tina: Yeah ...
John: a little further away, 'cause they're- Mm-hmm
it's there.
Tina: It is there.
John: It's there.
Tina: It is.
John: There are people who will absolutely support [00:07:00] you- Mm-hmm ... in whatever it is you wanna do, whether it be- Yeah ... voice acting, whether it be something else. Th- they will support you.
Tina: You can do this. Yeah. You know, so whether it is something else besides voice acting- Or
John: call us.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Call us. I'll... You know what? Listen, I always tell people, if you, if you're a client of ours- Mm-hmm ... for e- for example, if you're coming through our voice coaching program and you need, you need someone to, like- Give you a pep talk?
Tina: Yeah.
John: Call.
I'll jump on the phone with you. Oh, yeah, yeah. You know, e- even if I'm busy, I'll make time. I'll, you know- Yeah ... I'll jump out of a session or whatever, and I'll jump on the phone with you, and we'll, we'll chat a little bit, and I'll get you- Mm-hmm ... I'll get you hyped up again.
Tina: Yeah. Well, that's what I find, that I talk to a lot of students.
It, it is, well, I think a lot of it is because it's the unknown, right? Something different that they probably not doing, like, you know, maybe they are an accountant, you know? And now here I'm doing some voice acting, which is so different. So maybe you, you know, numbers are really easy for you, but, and then you're a little iffy on that.
I'll sit down and talk to you. Same thing- Yeah ... and talk to you about this. You know, we're... It, it's, you can do this. Definitely do this. And that's what I try to tell people, you know? Get that outside noise away. Yes. You know, put [00:08:00] that... Yeah. Absolutely. You can definitely do it. And it's funny because I do get a lot of, "So, like, hey, can you, can you send me these little, uh, pep talks," you know, "emails every day?"
Ah, just give us a call.
John: Yeah, absolutely.
Tina: I'll record it for you and send it to you.
John: Well, Joe, if you... Listen, if you, if you contact us on Facebook, uh, contact us on Instagram. Mm-hmm. You know, our, our Instagram is voicecoacheslife.
Tina: Okay.
John: Okay? But our Facebook is- Just voicecoaches ... voicecoaches. Yes. Yeah. So contact us anywhere, and we'll, we'll- Yeah
you know, you'll, you'll get that, you'll get that support you need.
Tina: Yes. You know? Yeah, absolutely.
John: All right. Awesome. Well, there you go. I hope... And, and again, I'm, we're really, I'm, I'm, I don't know what camera to look at, but-
Tina: Yeah.
John: I'm, I'm talking to you.
Tina: Yeah, over here. Yeah.
John: I'm talking to you. It must be this one, right?
Yeah. That's yours, I suppose.
Tina: I don't know.
John: Uh, yeah, I know. Support your friends and your family. Yeah. What are you doing? All right. Uh, cool. Thanks
Tina: for listening, yeah.

Tina and John talk about getting support from unexpected sources.
