Voice Coaches Radio Episode 708 What An Intro Webinar IS and is NOT

John: [00:00:00] All right. I am John.
Tina: And I am Tina.
John: And this is Voice Coaches Radio, episode 7 0 8.
Tina: Oh, wow. We've done a lot.
John: We've done a lot. We've done a lot. All right, so today's episode we're gonna talk about, um. What my, so I do an intro webinar. We kind of discussed this before. Mm-hmm. So I wanna talk a bit about what my webinar is.
And what it isn't.
Tina: Yes.
John: Right. Because I think there's some misconception sometimes and with any webinar that someone would, would sign up for. Um, but on that topic first, uh, I do webinars. Mm-hmm. Obviously, and their intro to voice acting, you wanna meet me? 'cause I, I do again, uh, an intro to voice acting webinar.
And afterwards I give people an opportunity. It's of course, optional, but I give people an opportunity to read to me at the end to get some feedback on their voices. [00:01:00] Anyone who's listening, who is interested in doing that. I actually have a 50% off code for you.
Tina: Ooh, you do?
John: I do. It's pod, POD pod. I hope that's active.
Tina: Yeah.
John: If it's not, I'll make sure it is. By the end of that, by the end of this episode, it will be when you are listening to this. Uh, so there you go. Uh, but, so if you're interested, but let's talk about what this intro webinar is and what it isn't. It's called Getting Paid to Talk. Okay. Uh, intro to Voiceovers.
All right. So, uh, first off, it's. I, I think it's kind of self-explanatory. Mm-hmm. Good thing it's an intro, voiceover.
Tina: Good thing. Yeah.
John: So, you know, let's talk about what it is A, actually, I like to end on a positive, so let's talk about what it isn't. How about that?
Tina: All right.
John: Let's talk about what it isn't first.
Tina: All right. What is it? What I'm like, what? What? I'm trying to think. Like what do people not, what people do they think it is. It isn't.
John: Yeah. Listen,
Tina: it's just what's so hard
John: because voiceovers is kind of a niche sort of. Industry, right? Yeah. I, I think, you know, it's [00:02:00] not like how many real voice actors do you meet?
Really working voice actors do you meet in your life? Yeah. You know, you meet a lot of accountants. Mm-hmm. A lot of realtors, uh, a lot of lawyers even, right? Yeah. Um, but not a ton of working voice actors. So, so I think that's part of it, right? So here's the one thing I tend to find, it's that some people, and I've talked about this board before, before coming to my webinar.
I hope it's just before, who knows? But, um, I think people. Assume that if they've been told they have a good voice, first of all, let me say that as a reason to come to the webinar. Yes, absolutely. Mm-hmm. But because people have been told they have a good voice, they think they could be discovered. Right.
Tina: It's like all of a sudden
John: Yeah. Break into the industry. Yeah. Which, you know, I debunk during the webinar. So what this isn't, uh, it's not going to be a webinar where by the end of this webinar you are discovered. And I cast you in something. We do a lot of voiceover work at the studio. Recently we did, um.
United Emirates? Uh, [00:03:00] United Emirates Racing. Oh, are you a race fan?
Tina: Uh, yes. Wait, is it a cars or horses?
John: Race? Car. Race. Car. Race. Car. Believe
Tina: you could tell I'm a big fan.
John: Yeah. I'm not. I'm not. Although not because I don't think it's cool.
Tina: No, I justand
John: I've just never been to one and, and I, at this point in my life, I try not to get into more things.
Tina: Yeah. '
John: cause I'm an all in person. Mm-hmm. You know, I get into something and that's it.
Tina: Is that your like,
John: yeah. Yeah. I don't
Tina: you At every race,
John: every race I, I'll have, I'll be wearing race car shirts, you know, I'll do it all. So, uh, I, I tend not to get into new things. Mm-hmm. Uh, I know what I like at this stage.
I turned 55, by the way.
Tina: Oh, well, happy birthday
John: on February 11th. So just, oh, you
Tina: missed it. I'm sorry.
John: Happy
Tina: birthday. Hope it was great one.
John: Thank you. Thank you. So, so 55, I don't want to get into new things. Mm-hmm. Like when people say, Hey, do you want to go? Play like pickleball wanna go play pickleball? No.
Tina: Yeah.
John: No. Why? Because I don't wanna, because next thing you know, I'll be buying my own pickleball paddles. I'll be, uh, I, I know me. I know me. So I, I I keep away from things that I don't wanna Okay. Spend a ton of money on. But [00:04:00] anyway, so, um, I, I think that people, when they, some people, uh, number one, they think that.
You know, they know maybe that we do a lot of work here at the studio and, and then they think, oh, if I go here and he, once he hears me,
Tina: yeah.
John: I'm gonna get cast on something That is not how it works. So this webinar, that's not what it is, right? No, this webinar is an intro, right? We, we, we hire mm-hmm. Real voice actors, people who have, uh, voiceover training or been with a voiceover coach and have a network quality demo, no matter how good you sound.
And you could sound amazing. Yeah. Maybe, maybe we chat on the phone and you just sound amazing. Trust me.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: I've heard it all.
Tina: Yes. Yep.
John: Been doing this for over 30 years. You're there's no person that's gonna be I'm, oh, I have to cast that person now. With, with Yeah. Even though they have no skill, it's just not happening
Tina: abs.
It does not happen.
John: So, so that's something you should know. Um, also, it's not a, this webinar. Isn't going [00:05:00] to be a networking webinar where you meet people and try to get work. It's just not that, you know, like there, there, okay.
Tina: Yeah.
John: And by the way, I don't think there is, I've never seen a voiceover webinar like that.
Tina: Yeah.
John: So I don't, I don't think there is anything that exists like that, but I, I've had a few people say, oh, I thought I was gonna show up, network, meet some people and get some jobs. First off, um, no. Yeah, it's not gonna happen. Secondly, networking with a bunch of other either. Aspiring voice actors or voice actors, that's not the way to do it.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Right. You should, uh, you should, you should. If you're gonna net, if you wanna call it networking or you want to call it relationship building, however you wanna call it, you wanna do that with people who hire voice actors. Yes. And yeah, I might be there, that's one person, but the rest of the people are like you.
Tina: Yeah. They're just learning about it.
John: Right. They can't help you.
Tina: Yeah.
John: So, uh, so there's that. Also, I'm gonna do it. I, I, I feel like I've seen a lot of ads for. Um, voiceover webinars on social media.
Tina: Yeah.
John: I've other, other people? Yeah. Ive seen aton of 'em. Yeah. And they say they use, they say [00:06:00] things like, break into the industry, uh, get rich quick.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: My webinars, none of those things. '
Tina: cause it's not,
John: yeah, because it's not real. It's not real. I'm not gonna talk about this pie in the sky stuff. Other people talk about the site tickets. I'm gonna tell you how you actually pursue voiceovers because I want anyone in my webinar who comes to my webinar.
I want anyone who wants to pursue voiceovers after that night to be able to do that. Mm-hmm. And the only way I can ensure that is to tell you how you actually pursue voiceovers. Yeah. Right? And, and, and if you take my webinar, I'll repeat some of this stuff. 'cause I try to set this up for people. Mm-hmm.
So they, you know, I don't want their, uh, expectations. Now what I will do is I'm gonna tell you a lot of good stuff. So let's talk about what the webinar does do.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: Okay. Um. I'm gonna tell you how to, uh, you know, first of all, I'm gonna talk about what a voiceover even is.
Tina: Yes.
John: Right?
Tina: That's good.
John: Uh, important.
Tina: Yeah. Glad you're hitting that part.
John: Yeah, exactly. Just
Tina: wanna make sure.
John: Yeah. Uh, and I will talk a little bit about how when you get into voiceovers and you will get down on a local and a regional level, that is where you will start. Mm-hmm. [00:07:00] Um, I will talk about, um. How you could go out, where you could look mm-hmm.
To get local and regional jobs. I will do a little section on that. I say a little section because listen, I could, I could talk about getting local and regional jobs for like three hours, right? Yeah, yeah. I mean, there's so much out there, but you know, when we're doing an hour and a half webinar, we don't have that kind of time.
So I will give you a little section and how to go out and, and you know, where to look for local and regional voiceover jobs. But not only that, um, I'll talk a bit about. Developing work relationships or developing repeat clients. It's a big part of this industry, right? You know that.
Tina: Oh, it is. Yeah.
Absolutely. You
John: know, you, it's one of the best things about the industry. Mm-hmm. Because once you become a voice actor, it becomes steady work for you.
Tina: Yeah.
John: But you have to become that person. So I talk about how to develop work relationships a bit, uh, during the webinar. So there's that. And, uh, I, I also get into.
Um, we'll watch videos, which I think is great, you know? Mm-hmm. It's not just me in front of the, in, in front of the camera, although there's plenty of that. Uh, but, uh, you know, just like now, uh, you know. Yeah. For someone who doesn't like to be in front [00:08:00] of the camera, by the way,
Tina: I know. Also, we're all, I seem
John: to be in front of the camera a lot, you know, it's not my thing, but I seem to be in front of that camera quite a bit.
But, uh. We will watch two videos during the webinar, right? Mm-hmm. Uh, first video, pros and cons of getting into voiceovers. Mostly pros.
Tina: Yeah.
John: This is the greatest job in the world as far as I'm concerned.
Tina: It, yeah, it's fun.
John: And there's never been more opportunity than now. Mm-hmm. Really? Uh, and, but so mostly pros, so we'll keep it to two potential cons or potential challenges.
Tina: Yeah.
John: And, and, uh, so we'll do that so you kinda get a feeling. Mm-hmm. You know, I want, again, I want reality for you, you know? Yeah. Yeah. And then, uh, watch a video and talk about the demo. You do have to have one.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: Right.
Tina: Yeah.
John: So it, it's, uh, in, uh, during that video you'll hear all about it, of course.
Mm-hmm. The, the demo. But you'll also hear two network quality demos, what demos are supposed to sound like. So I think that'll be mm-hmm. Uh, that, that's fun. You know? It's great, yeah. For people to hear. And then I give you a chance to read for me, you know, and, and you know, I, I give people at the end who want to a chance to read for [00:09:00] me.
So that's what the webinar is. Yeah, I just wanted to kind of go through that. 'cause I, I have had, this week in particular, we talked about this kind of off air. Yeah. I've had a few people kind of, uh, tell me and it's cool. I love to hear it. Listen, I, I want people to tell me this sort of thing that. Their expectation of the webinar wasn't quite what they thought.
You know what, what it was. Okay. Which it was weird because our, there's a description to the webinar. Mm-hmm. Pretty on point.
Tina: Yeah.
John: But I've had people come around and tell me they don't read the description, which is strange again. Mm-hmm. But they don't. Uh, so, um, yeah, I just want to get into that, you know, uh, just talk a little bit about, uh, what it really is.
Tina: You really what? It really comes down to you keeping it, you're keeping it real. Yeah. You're telling them we're not sugarcoating anything. And that's the, that's the biggest thing that I'm seeing from some others that, like you said, oh, you're gonna, right, as soon as your demo's done out the door, you're gonna have massive amount of jobs.
John: Yeah,
Tina: yeah. [00:10:00] No,
John: I've even seen, you know what? I've seen an ad for. This is wild. I have seen. Ads where people go, oh, you don't need a demo. Yes. And by the way, by the way, those people have demos. Yeah. Factually. Mm-hmm. I, as soon as I saw that, I go, what in the world? And then I then, so then I found those. I Googled those people.
Yeah. I went to the webpage and the people telling you that you don't need demos. Have demos.
Tina: Yeah. Have a demo. Yeah. You ha
John: So they're not even telling you the truth. Yeah. See, they're trying to get you. Mm-hmm. They're trying to sell you tickets. What do people call 'em? Wolf tickets? Is that like
Tina: a
John: term? I,
Tina: I've never heard of that.
John: Yeah. Oh, you haven't? No. There's like wolf tickets. I don't know what that means. I feel like it's like false tickets. I don't know why.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Why would they call em wolf? I feel like,
Tina: uh, to like wolf tickets. Tickets alert to get you in.
John: Maybe that's it. Then they get you.
Tina: Yeah. I dunno.
John: I have no idea. Said Wolf tickets.
Yeah. I'll have to look that up after this.
Tina: Go ahead and do
John: that one. So what's list that you're like, that's not what Wolf tickets are? I'm pretty sure it is though. I'm pretty sure. Pretty sure it is. Uh, yeah. Right. So, um. You know, by the way, I had a, I should tell [00:11:00] you, I did have, um, a very, very loyal listener mm-hmm.
Come to the webinar. Oh,
Tina: that's awesome.
John: Uh, but no, super nice guy. And you know how I knew, yeah. He was, he was, um, quoting, I mean, he really listens. He was quoting things from. Oh
Tina: my
John: God. The podcast during the webinar. And at first I didn't catch it. At first I was, I, I didn't know what he was saying. Like we were kind of outta place sometimes.
Yeah. So I was like, what's going on? Yeah. And then, then I was like, oh, he's quoting like an episode from like two months ago or something. Wow. You know what I mean? Yeah.
Tina: Wow. Well that's awesome. It
John: was very funny. Like, I forgot I said it. There was a part where I had said my son. Something about how I tried to get my son to play guitar.
Tina: Yeah.
John: And he didn't learn. I forgot I even talked about that. Yeah. And he, and so I said, my son wasn't really interested in voiceovers. And he goes, he didn't learn how to play guitar either.
Tina: You're just like, huh?
John: I'm like, what?
Tina: Yeah. How did do I,
John: are we really? What going on? That's weird. How's he, does he know?
My son is my son, so.
Tina: Oh, that's good.
John: Yes. So nice guy, [00:12:00] nice guy, but didn't come, did not, uh, sign up for a program as of yet. Mm-hmm. I encourage you
Tina: Yes. To
John: do that.
Tina: Yeah. He's got an interest. If he's listening, he's got an interest,
John: you know, and, and I think, by the way, I'd like you to talk a bit about how our program's the same thing, right?
Our program is. Is a reality of how to get into the industry. Right.
Tina: It really, it really, really is. You know, I, um, I will tell you a lot of times when, especially after we do the second class, which is about techniques, I get a lot of students at the end, you know, say, Hey, any questions or anything like that, you can see the look on their faces like.
Wow. I didn't, uh, I, I just thought I was gonna read, you know, so we're really telling you exactly what it's, yes, you are reading, but there's techniques and stuff like that, so I get that a lot. You know, and they're just like, oh, you know. Oh, really? So we really do tell you, and I, and I, you know, I. I say, I don't tiptoe around, you know, and I'm like right to the point, but it's not mean I'm, you know, I'm like, listen, yes, that's, you know, but this is really the reality of [00:13:00] it, you know?
Yeah. Yeah. And I try to be open and honest because, you know, you're not gonna walk outta here. And some do get jobs right away. Abso absolutely. But, you know, it takes a little bit.
John: Can't expect. Yeah. Can't expect it.
Tina: Yeah. Yeah. So, and we're, we're real about that.
John: About it. Yeah. We take you, you know, and, and it, and sometimes there's no rhyme or reason I, you know, um.
It's not that sometimes you put yourself in the right place at the right time.
Tina: Yes.
John: Right.
Tina: Yeah.
John: And sometimes you didn't, and that's all that is. Yeah. You know, like I knew, listen, I, I know, um, a guy who got a job within two weeks of getting outta here, you know, got his demo, got a job within two weeks, and he's a six figure earner right now.
Wow. Great for him. But I, I know someone else took him nine and a half months to get his first voiceover job. Think about that. Yeah. Nine and a half months. Most people would've quit by then. Yeah. And that's, and again, I've always said this, you don't fail in voiceovers, you quit.
Tina: Yeah.
John: He didn't quit. And now he's close to a seven figure earner as a voice actor.
Wow. And this is a guy that took nine and a half months to get his first job.
Tina: Yeah.
John: He quit his, he worked for the federal government. He got to retire early.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: And focus on voiceovers. That and that, [00:14:00] again, you can't count on that either. Yeah. But you see what I mean, like nine and a half months it took him to get his first job.
Tina: Yeah.
John: That can happen. So, um, yeah, I just wanted to kind of go through, Hey, this is what, this is what it is, this is what it is, what
Tina: it's what to expect. Yeah.
John: Yeah. Because I, you know, it's very strange. Twice in one week I had. Two people say some wild things to me and I'm like, what, what is going on?
Tina: Yeah.
John: You know what is going
Tina: on? You're being punked.
John: I know. I thought that, I was thinking like, what? Like, yeah. The thing I get, so the, the, you know, I've been doing this for so long, like I am eventually gonna sit down and do the math, but over 30 years started when I was like 21, you know? And, uh, and so, but I've been a producer for, for a long time as well, so I, I'm both sides of it.
Mm-hmm. I still do voiceovers and I get people after listening to my. To my webinar, who will say things on the phone to me, well, here's what I'm doing, and they're, and these are things that are not. Productive.
Tina: Yeah.
John: You know, oh, I've signed up for this. And, uh, it's a lot of waiting usually. Mm-hmm. People who are saying, I signed up for this website and [00:15:00] I, and I'm on an Instagram and I'm, and I'm just, and they're just a lot, a lot of waiting and, oh, I've been doing this for a year and a half, and then I'm like, gimme a guess.
You haven't gotten any work yet. Well, no. I'm like, okay, well, you know, right. So I, you know, listen, I'm trying to give you some advice. You can take my advice or not.
Tina: Yeah, yeah.
John: But what you're doing is not how, because that's what is that that's being discovered, right?
Tina: Yeah.
John: When you just wait somewhere and you wait for things to happen, that is being discovered.
That's not really how the industry works. Nor does any industry, by the way.
Tina: No,
John: I don't think so. Nor does any industry. And so, you know, I'm just trying to help you when you come to a webinar, I have an interest mm-hmm. In seeing you. Uh. You know, find success or at least follow your dream if your dream is voiceovers.
Tina: Yeah. Mm-hmm.
John: I, I have an interest in seeing that because you've now come to my webinar and I have Yeah. You know, a kind of personal stock in you. Mm-hmm. You know, so when, when I'm trying to explain to you how it should be done, and I, and I might even talking about through us, although you should. Yeah,
you
Tina: should.
You definitely
John: should. You should. But, but, uh, you know, I'm trying to tell you [00:16:00] the real steps to take. Mm-hmm. You know, I, I would just tell people. Yeah, don't get annoyed with me.
Tina: Yeah.
John: I'm trying to help you. I'm trying to help, you know, I know, you know, you know, a year and a half of doing the same thing and not having any results, you should know that
Tina: there's,
John: that you, what you're doing is not working anyway, so, you know,
Tina: you gotta make a little changes.
Just a little
John: changes makes a little changes. Well, more than a little in that case, but yeah, you're right. You're right. So, great. So I, um, there you go. I just wanted to tug in. Talk quickly about what, what the intro webinar is and what it isn't. Mm-hmm. I know we did in the other order, just 'cause I like to end on a positive note and
Tina: you did.
I think I ended,
John: I think so. Yeah. I think so. Yeah. That's great. I love, listen, I love people. I love doing the webinar. I love, I absolutely love chatting with people on the phone afterwards. Yeah. Having them read for me, being someone's first step, I love it. Mm-hmm. I absolutely love it. So please, if you're interested in voiceovers at all and.
You want to go, come to my intro webinar again. Use the uh, discount code pod, POD. You get [00:17:00] 50% off and you get to meet me, what, what better?
Tina: I know that's awesome, right? That that's worth the, the price.
John: My wife would disagree. Yeah. But yeah. Yeah. Alright. Awesome. Well, listen, I wanna thank everybody very much for listening and if, if.
You're watching, which I mm-hmm. You know, I
Tina: don't,
John: who knows if you're watching
Tina: that's, sorry.
John: You can just listen. That's fine. Whatever you wanna do. I, you know, I I would not watch this. I've not watched it. I have not watched any of our episodes at
Tina: all either, have I?
John: Yeah, no, no, no, no. That's a, yeah, no, absolutely not.
Yeah. Yeah. So there you go. I wanna thank everybody very much and again, um, I am John gia voice coaches.com
Tina: and I'm [email protected].
John: And just to remind you, we are, I'm gonna say, let's do it. Eight episodes. Every eight episodes every two months. Okay. We'll do listener questions. Okay. So if you want Yes.
Your question to be answered. Mm-hmm. Okay. If that's what you want, I would assume if you have a question, you would like it to be answered. Uh, email one of us with the question.
Tina: [00:18:00] Yes.
John: Okay. And, and we will, uh, we'll say your name, not your last name, just your first or maybe last initial and we'll, uh, we'll answer your question on, on the air.
Tina: Wow, that's impressive.
John: You. Very impressive. Alright, thank you. We out.
