Voice Coaches Radio #690 “Are You Ready?”
John: [00:00:00] Well, hello my friends. I am John.
Tina: And I'm Tina.
John: And this is Voice Coaches Radio.
Tina: Yes it is. Yeah. Duh, dun dun. I forgot that I forgot about it already.
John: There you go. Hey, we're gonna do an episode called, are You Ready? Are you ready?
Tina: Let's Rumble.
John: Yeah. And, and, and the premise of that is, hey, um, there's so many people that I meet.
Um, in, in my webinars or just here at, at the studio who say things like, you know, I, I've always wanted to get into voiceovers, um, but I just don't, I don't think I'm ready. And they say things like, well, I just have a lot going on in my life, or I'm just super busy. And what I say to those people is, Hey, um, you're always gonna be busy.
Tina: Oh, absolutely.
John: You're always gonna be busy. Mm-hmm. There's no time in your life, like if you're waiting. To be ready or, or you're waiting to not be busy. Mm-hmm. You're never gonna do this because there's not gonna [00:01:00] be a time in your life where you go, you know what? I have absolutely nothing going on. You
Tina: always,
John: yes.
Time to do voiceovers. The perfect time is now, right? Mm-hmm.
Tina: Yeah. You have to, I mean, we're never ready for anything, so it doesn't really matter. I really, honestly, I will tell you this one story that, um, when I was about to get married, and this was years and years ago, and you would end the Catholic church and the priest has to sit both of you down, and he asked me about kids and he says, are you ready for kids?
And I go, actually, I'm not sure. I'm not sure right at this moment. Right now, I'm not, I'm unsure. I love kids, but I'm unsure. So my, he asked my husband to be, at the time, he's now an ex, um, that's a whole nother podcast.
John: Podcast.
Tina: And, and he asked him the same question and he said, yes. He, he goes, yeah, I'm ready.
The priest, he says, I have a little hesitation. About because [00:02:00] you're unsure, but he's ready. I said, and then I said to him, I go, but I'm unsure about a lot of things in life. What do I stop myself from them, because I'm unsure. No, I've gotta take that journey, you know? And then he was like, okay, well bless you.
Go on, move. Yeah, go get married. Good luck with that. Yeah. Yeah. But that's the thing. Was I ready? No. At that time I wasn't ready. I was unsure. But I still wanted to move on to that journey. Keep going, doing that journey. So we're never ready for anything.
John: No one's. I, I would say I don't think anyone's ever ready for kid.
No one goes, I I'm surprised your ex-husband said that. Yeah, I mean, I definitely, when before we had my son, I was not like, yeah, I'm ready. I, because I, because there's no. I always say there's no books. There's lots of books on it. Yeah. They're not helpful at all.
Tina: No, they're
John: not. There's no good real guideline on how to raise kids.
Right. So, uh, lucky for you, there's a guideline on how to do voiceovers.
Tina: Yeah, yeah, that's true. That that's absolutely true. There is,
John: but that's have, if you can have kids, you can be a voice actor. I think that's a [00:03:00] lot harder. I think I, yeah,
Tina: it's, it's,
John: uh, but, but, but you listen, I think, um, you don't wanna have regret, right?
Yeah. Like we talked about this. Off the air.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: Con accident. Yeah. So, uh, we, you know, um, I think a lot of, like I, my son, um, my son was gonna learn how to play guitar. He was younger, you know, he said, I wanna learn how to play guitar. And so we encouraged him and we paid for lessons and he quit with a month, not long.
And that, by the way, this was, he's 21 now. And so this is probably when he was about around 13 years old. Okay. Right. Yeah. So we're talking eight years ago. He said to me about a month ago. Ah, dad, I wish I had continued learning how to play guitar because I'd be a guitar player right now and I could be in a band.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Yeah. Because he looks like he's in a band. You see this kid who's like, uh, you're in a band. He is not in a band. He can't, he's not, he doesn't really sing and he doesn't play anything. But so he is like, I, you know, I wish I'd [00:04:00] continued play. And that's the thing, you're never gonna regret doing something.
No. You're gonna regret not doing something. Doing, yeah.
Tina: Trying.
John: Because even if you, let's say in your eyes, fail, and I don't believe in that. I don't believe in failing. I believe in quitting. Like no one fails, they quit. Right? Mm-hmm. So I, when someone says I failed, I'm like, Hmm, that just means you gave up.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Right?
Tina: Yeah. True.
John: But even if you fail and you just, and then when I say that, you decide it's not for you, and that can happen. Mm-hmm. Maybe you start something and you go, you know what? It's not for me. Do you still regret it? You learned?
Tina: Yes, that's
John: true.
Tina: Yeah. Instead
John: of, yeah, instead of going like years later, like, oh, I wish I'd gotten a voiceovers, or, I wish I'd gotten into this.
I wish I'd played guitar. I wish I had done this. Um, I would be a professional right now. You know, do it. Find out. Yeah. Don't, don't tell me that you could've done it. Do it. You know? Yeah. And so I always think now's the time. 'cause you, there's never gonna be the perfect time.
Tina: No, absolutely not.
John: And I really think you should view it as.
Now's the perfect time.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: Right. Now's the perfect time. Always look at it that way, you know? Um, so [00:05:00] if, if voiceovers is something you wanna do, today's the day. If it's something else, do that thing too. Yeah. Whatever that is, do that. Uh, and there's, there's what's great, there's the resources out there, so you can, you can
Tina: mm-hmm.
John: Stick your toe in or educate yourself a little bit and say, okay, is this for me? Like, our website has voice coaches.com. We have. If you're listening, you found this, we have almost 700 episodes of this podcast. Very helpful.
Tina: Yeah. Talking to a variety of people in it, out of the business, it doesn't matter.
We talked to them, um, a lot. Like you said, a lot of resources on our webpage.
John: Eight eBooks, right? Eight,
Tina: yeah.
John: Free eBooks right now or something like that. Yeah. All complimentary.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: Uh, so you can check that out. But also, I, I do webinar, I do an intro webinar. You're welcome to sign up for that. And I, it believe me, I, I.
Tell you how it is. You know, I don't, I don't pretend you're gonna be discovered or break in. You know, there's a lot of people out there that do that. You know, they
Tina: Oh,
John: absolutely. Yeah. Oh yeah. They, they talk about how, oh, it's, it's so easy. You're just gonna break into [00:06:00] the industry. Mm-hmm. Uh, we don't do that.
We tell you how this really works, and so if that's something you're interested in, come to the webinar and you'll find out. And, you know. So take it from there.
Tina: Yeah.
John: Take that first step. I, you know, the only thing you can do is take that first step and then, and then keep moving forward. And if it's something you really wanna do, you don't give up.
Tina: Yeah, that's absolutely. Take the journey. Yeah. And, and we wanna be on that journey with you.
John: Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. 'cause listen, there's, there's, on the low end, uh, there's like $4.4 billion worth of work out there right now.
Tina: You know, that's a, first of all, low end. But that's a lot,
John: that's a lot, a lot of work.
There's plenty of work for everybody. And so if you stick with it, you will get work. I always tell people that. I say, listen, there's no one who's ever told me, I've never had this happen. I've had people go, Hey John, I have a tough time getting work. And you know, great thing about voice coaches too. Mm-hmm.
If you end up coming through our program or learning how to mm-hmm. Do voiceovers with us, we offer lifetime support, so we're always here for you. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. We're like, we're not like, oh, you're done with the program. See you, see ya.
Tina: Yeah.
John: No. Now we're, we're, Hey, if you, if you're having trouble getting work, contact us.
Like, I'll do everything besides go get you work, but I'll look at [00:07:00] your branding. Let's look at your branding, see what it looks like. Who are you sending your demos to, how often are you following up?
Tina: Yeah.
John: We'll, we'll get into that, but. Um, the, the thing is, is that you can't give up. If you really want to do this, you will.
And I've never had anyone prove to me, like I say, if I want you to do this, really do it. And then come to me and tell me you couldn't find work. And I've never had anyone do it. Like, yeah, I, people say they quit. Oh, yeah. I couldn't get work. Okay. When's the last time I sent a demo out? Well, two months ago.
Okay. Well, you're not actually Yeah. Doing this. Mm-hmm. Right. If you continue to plug along. And you market yourself. You follow up, you will get work. There's so much work out there, and believe me, your voice is something that can be used. This is for everybody now. Almost, almost everybody. I mean, there's exceptions to every rule.
Mm-hmm. But, um, we hire all different types of voices now because it's conversational, it's real. We want real people. Yes. Which means we want. People who sound like you.
Tina: Yeah, absolutely. And, and you know, I guess ev you listen to commercials, you listen to people on radio, [00:08:00] everybody's voice is different, completely different.
Mine doesn't sound like Marissa, you know, and, and so, but you hear different voices. So if you think to yourself, oh, this, I don't have the voice for it. No. Yes you do. Yes you do. 'cause people want different things. 'cause we're all different. Nobody is the same. Absolutely. Nobody's the same.
John: You got it. And just believe me, there's someone out there, you know?
Um. I, I've had this happen where I'll put five demos in front of a client. Like client will say to me, they'll kinda gimme the leeway and say, pick five. Mm-hmm. Five demos from voice actors you think are right for this project. I will pick the person I want and they'll pick the person that was fifth on my list.
Tina: Yeah.
John: You know, they're like, I want this person. I'm like, wow, okay. I did not see that coming, but there's a reason. Mm-hmm. Like, they just hear your voice and they go, yep, that's the one, that's the one I want for my product or for my corporate training, or whatever. Mm-hmm. So yeah, there, there, there's someone for you out there.
And once you get that first job. Usually things start to happen.
Tina: Yes, it does. It keeps coming.
John: Yep, it
Tina: does.
John: Yep. As long as you do the right things. Uh, and when I say that simple things like show up on time.
Tina: Mm-hmm. [00:09:00] Which is, yeah.
John: Be good at what you do. In other words, know your job.
Tina: Yeah.
John: And be likable. And honestly, I always kind of joke about this.
I, I tell people if you show up on time and you're good at what you do, I already like you. Yeah. You're pretty much. Yeah. Right. Do those two things. I, you, I, I I like you already.
Tina: Yeah. I mean, that's that you think about, you apply that to any job, you're gonna be successful. Yep. And you, and, and voice, uh, acting is that it's a job.
So be successful at it, do those things.
John: Yep. Absolutely. Absolutely. So, yeah, it's, it's, uh. So the que So to answer the question, are you ready? The answer's yes. Yeah. You are ready. We do this thing where we canvas everybody, right? We're like, I'm gonna get everyone's opinion.
Tina: Yes.
John: And I always tell people, you don't want opinion matters yours.
Do you wanna do this? Mm-hmm. Okay. Your opinion matters. Don't listen to other people because I, I feel a lot of times subconsciously, and I, I, I don't think people do this. Purposely I, I would hope.
Tina: Yeah, you I know,
John: but you would hope. But subconsciously, yeah, subconsciously. I think people try to talk you out of [00:10:00] doing something you really wanna do because they're not doing anything they really wanna do.
Tina: Yeah,
John: right. They're stuck in a job they don't like. And then if you all of a sudden achieve something and you're like, this is amazing, that person's like, well, what am I doing?
Tina: Yeah, it makes them look at themselves and go, geez, I can't do that.
John: And you should look at that in a positive way, which is you're inspiring them.
Listen.
Tina: Yeah.
John: You don't have to listen to the person go, don't do that. You already have a job. Cool. I don't love my job. And if you do, by the way, that's cool too. Voiceover is something you can do. Not only can you, you should absolutely start. Doing it on the side.
Tina: Yes, absolutely. That's
John: right. You should have another form of income.
Mm-hmm. Do this on the side. There's room in your life for multiple things you love. Mm-hmm. So even if you love your job, voice, acting still may be for you or whatever else you do. Yeah. You know, there's other things in life. It's not like you go, oh, I found the thing and that's it.
Tina: I'm done.
John: I mean, I've kind of done that with voiceovers, to be honest.
I mean, I've kind of done that. I mean, I don't wanna do anything else. Uh, this is it for me, but yeah. But, uh, you know, if you think this is [00:11:00] something you'd love, and again, if it's this or something else, today is the day. Take that, take that first step, see if it's for you, and then keep moving forward if you decided it's for you.
Tina: Yeah, I think the biggest what you said is that, um, you don't wanna look down the line and, and go, oh, I should have. When you could have,
John: right? Yeah, exactly. That's something you don't wanna do because time can get away from you.
Tina: That goes by so fast.
John: It's the most valuable thing, but you can't buy it back.
No. It's the one thing you can't buy back.
Tina: No.
John: Right.
Tina: No.
John: And so, yeah, if, if something you wanna do today is the day waiting and waiting, like I've had people say to me, it's wild. Like to me, I always feel like it's a wild statement when someone says to me something like, I've wanted to do this for 10 years.
I'm always like.
Tina: Yeah, that's a long time
John: to sit on that. There's nothing in my life I've wanted to do for 10 years.
Tina: Yeah.
John: That I haven't done, right? Mm-hmm. Like 10 years.
Tina: That's a long time. I mean, I think the biggest is if you ask that question, are you ready? And you're asking yourself that, then just come and talk to us and we'll tell you.
You know, [00:12:00]
John: one of the great things about
Tina: Yeah, that's, yeah, that's the thing.
John: One of the great things about our program too is, and even just the webinar, I do have people read to me in the webinar. Mm-hmm. They'll give you a little feedback. Mm-hmm. But for, in our program, we do an evaluation.
Tina: Yeah.
John: So we'll take you through, uh, it's a, an a.
Was it a 14 point?
Tina: That's, that's like 15 points,
John: 15 point evaluation process. Mm-hmm. And if for some reason, for any reason we don't think it's for you, we're gonna let you know.
Tina: Yeah. Yeah. We are. And this is what I tell students when we start to do that, that evaluation. I'm listening to your voice. That's what it really comes down.
'cause they get nervous. Oh, what? It's evaluation. No, we're just listening to your voice. We're listening to what it can do, what areas of strength, you know, where do I hear you in this voiceover world. And if we don't think you can do it. We'll let you know. Yeah. We're not gonna Lee John say, oh yeah, you're gonna make millions.
You know? Yeah. No.
John: And a lot of times it has nothing to do with your voice. Yeah. A lot of times it's, I, I will say though, I was, I love being proved wrong. I do. I'm one of those people, like, some people hate to be wrong. I'm someone who loves it. I, I love it because usually it's something po [00:13:00] like I had this long time ago, I'm not gonna say her name.
I do remember her name. Um, but I had a woman a long time ago that, uh, she came to us through someone else, so I hadn't met her yet.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: And I was doing her initial. Session and she was, I'm gonna say she was 75 years old. Sound every day of it too. She, she a really unique voice, really cool sounding voice.
Mm-hmm. But she had fallen down at some point before I had met her and knocked her front teeth out. So she had like false teeth in. Mm-hmm. But she needed to get her teeth fixed. And she said to me, um, she said, I, you know, I, I wanna do this because I wanna fix my teeth. Mm-hmm. And I said, I'm gonna refund your money.
And I want you to go take that money and use to fix your teeth because this isn't something that you can, you may not make that money right away. And Yeah. And I don't want you to do this because you have to fix your teeth. Take the money that you would pay me. Yeah.
Tina: Yeah.
John: And go fix your teeth. And she said no.
And I, and I don't usually do this, by the way. So, you know, [00:14:00] what we do is we, we do an evaluation, we make sure it's for you. Mm-hmm. And then you come through the program, right? Mm-hmm. I tried to give her her money back every session.
Tina: Oh.
John: Every session. I was like, because I was just like, I didn't, but she refused.
She was like, no, and lemme tell you something. This is amazing. When she got done with the program mm-hmm. She got an audiobook almost immediately. Wow. And she called me on the phone. She's like, I told you. And I was like, this is great. Listen, I'm, I'm, I'm super happy to be wrong. Yeah. And then she went on and did a bunch of work.
Uh, so, you know, listen, I, you know, there's, there's something for everybody.
Tina: Mm-hmm.
John: And so, and you know, uh, again, don't listen to naysayers. Yeah. I've had people do that. I've had people say, um. When I, I've said, I don't know if this is for you, and they tell me this.
Tina: Yeah.
John: There's something to be said about that.
There's something to be said about someone who basically says, I don't care what you say, I'm doing this. Yeah.
Tina: No. Could I think good for you? Yes. That they're gonna prove you wrong.
John: Yeah.
Tina: Yes.
John: Yes. Awesome. You know, so, [00:15:00] uh, listen, if, if something you wanna do, today is the day. Uh, and you know, and, and again, I'm not just talking voiceovers, this applies to everything.
Everything. Yeah. Uh, but yes, you are ready. Trust me. Uh, stop telling yourself you're not ready.
Tina: I'll do it
John: because you are. Mm-hmm. All right. So I want to thank everybody for listening. I am John once again,
Tina: and I'm Tina.
John: Do we give out our information? We forgot last time.
Tina: Oh, did we not? I don't know. Did we pretend gave it out?
Yeah, maybe.
John: Yeah.
Tina: All right. Oh,
John: yeah. John Gia voice. Listen if you have any ideas. Okay. Any ideas for, for subjects for us? Yeah. Episodes for us? Mm-hmm. Uh, or you have questions, comments that we can address. Here on the podcast.
Tina: Oh, please, yes.
John: John gia voice coaches.com
Tina: And, and [email protected].
John: There you go.
Hit one of us up and we will Absolutely. We will address every question we get and if you have subjects. Mm-hmm. As long as it seems to work with our format, we'll do it. Yes, sure. We're all bad. I love ideas for format, so. For, did I say performance? I love ideas for episodes. Made no sense what I just said.
All right, so [00:16:00] I'm begin By the way, we, I I'm just, you know, this is our second time doing this episode. Yeah. This is why this is happening. We, we did this episode. It's for some, somehow, uh, it just stopped recording outta nowhere.
Tina: That's don't even know. Fantastic.
John: Yeah. Well, we, we, we, we really got it down now.
Tina: I think so next week.
John: Alright. Yeah. So thank you very much everybody have a wonderful. Morning, evening, afternoon, whatever it is. You're listening to this. Yes. But thank you very much. I'm John.
Tina: And I'm Tina.
John: We.
Tina: And I'm Tina.
John: And this is Voice Coaches Radio.
Tina: Yes it is. Yeah. Duh, dun dun. I forgot that I forgot about it already.

John: We.
Tina and John talk about the fact that many people don’t pursue things in life because they never feel like “they’re ready”.
