Voice Coaches Radio #685 – Lisa Nastu Is Ready, Willing & Able Behind the Mic!

[00:00:00] Voice coaches radio, everything voiceover.
Marissa: Welcome to a brand new episode of Voice Coaches Radio. My name is Marissa. Joined this week, but well, a couple special guests, I guess. Uh, we've got Lisa, how do I pronounce your last name? Is, is it nasty?
Lisa: Yes. Nest
Marissa: two. Okay. I, I, I think I got it right the first time, like in the demo session. And I, I think I got it right now.
Uh, and, and also you can see, I mean, well, you can see Lisa, nobody else can, but I've got a puppy hanging off my shoulder right now, so, so Georgia is technically joining us as well. She's gonna be a year and. Four days, so
Lisa: Aw. Birthday wishes.
Marissa: Yeah. Not, not really a puppy anymore, I guess. Right? Um, they, they grow up so fast, but, uh, so I wanted to get you here on the pod because, you know, it, it's always great to have the student experience going through the program and, and learning about voiceover, the ins and outs and, [00:01:00] and she obviously the excitement of whatever's to come.
Um. Give us a little bit about you, about your background, what got you here? Absolutely. 'cause I know that you, if I'm remembering correctly, and you can, you know, obviously correct me if I'm wrong, um, did you like go through one of our workshops like a long time ago?
Lisa: I did. I did, yeah. Many years ago. In fact, I broke the cardinal rule of silencing my phone.
Um. So I think it was probably 10 years ago. I'm not kidding. And, um, handle this situation here and I don't know why I didn't have any impulse to pursue it because I really was always interested in it, and yet, you know, life got in the way and it was just very, you know, difficult for me at the time I was working.
Um, in the city and didn't have a lot of free time, and now I work from home and I, you know, have flexibility. So, [00:02:00] um, it was at night and I thought, well, I would be remiss if I did not at least attempt to try it again. Right? So I had the wonderful coaches, the ones that I met through voice. Coaches and um, John, I believe.
Mm-hmm.
Lisa: And it was just an amazing experience to have so much knowledge imparted to us about the industry, what to expect. Oh gosh. The type of voiceovers that they handle now that are not the traditional. You know, commercials from long ago and, um, announcer voices meaning, you know, they're not just the one man with the booming voice telling you what to buy or eat or whatever.
And so I thought, well, I have a chance maybe at something a little different. And so I went for it and I'm so happy I did.
Marissa: Yeah. And, and I gotta tell you, um, I mean, you did great and I, I know that it's like here, here, you waited to, to go and, and jump on into the program and then, and then you got sick. [00:03:00] I know.
And it's like, life just keeps throwing wrenches in your plans, but, but you fought through and you kept going and like, uh, you know, it's a testament to the, the joy I think that you get from it and, and Oh yeah. You know, just. The hope of the future and, and all of that kind of stuff. Um, Georgia is just trying to look as cute as possible.
Right now. She,
Lisa: it's just, I wish the audience could see I her snuggling up on your ear and then licking your cheek.
Marissa: It is really ridiculous. Um, I, I'm like so distracted. Um, I'm sorry. Uh, but, um, how, how do you feel like that that situation played into. Your progress or your, your push, your drive, your motivation.
Lisa: Yeah. What do you think? I mean, such a good question. And, and having, um, had COVID for the first time ever, I mean, I've never had COVID. My mother who lives with me had it as well. And, um, [00:04:00] we didn't have any help. I usually have caregivers helping me, so it was. Me with my, you know, COVID, head, brain cough, everything.
Um, and still fighting on to make sure I got on that call and had at one point between different, um. Portions of the, um, discussion. I laid my head down on my desk so that I could take a break, and I kept saying, just get up again and keep trying. And, um, I happened to be, I think one of the last people in the class that was called on to, um, have the one-on-one call at the end.
You do a, a script that's on the screen, so it's your first script and then, you know, they'll kind of filter through to see if this is something that you would, um, be good at, at least enough to, you know, join the program. So I did not think I was gonna get selected, [00:05:00] um, but I was. Pleasantly surprised that, um, I did get the okay.
And I, um, the next morning read for another colleague, um, of John's at voice Acting, and I just. He said, you know what, you're a very different voice. Um, you know, there's maybe some possibilities, you know, things like, I don't know, audio books or just something that would be what we think could, you could tailor make your specific voice too.
But we wanna discover it and we'd love to join, have you join us. And then from there, I just got so excited. The courses were so easy to understand. So, um, comprehensive. I read them over several times. Um, and then as soon as I met you, I knew, you know, this is, you made it so much better for me not having love it
Marissa: for sight.
Right.
Lisa: And it [00:06:00] was, I was like, she's gorgeous. I mean, I was just, you know. Captured. But, um,
Marissa: no, I, I'm, I you made
Lisa: it so much easier. It was unbelievable. I'm
Marissa: glad that I could, you know, because I know that some people come in, they question themselves, they're not quite sure what they're getting themselves into.
Lisa: Right.
Marissa: You know, can I do, like, we always have those questions. Can I do it? Am I good enough? Like, I'm probably not gonna be able to do this. Like, you know, we, we talk ourselves down so, so much. Oh, yes. Um, that I think it's always important to know. That you're doing well, what you're doing well, what you can improve on.
Mm-hmm. Here's how you can improve upon it, you know? Right. And just ha, it's not me handholding, it's just me kind of. Reaffirming, like, yeah, you can do this. Stop getting in your own way. Yeah. You know, and just, just keep, keep trucking along, keep going. Yeah. Um, you know, and especially again in your case, I know that you were having the breathing [00:07:00] issues 'cause like it's still, it's everlasting for you.
Lisa: Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
Marissa: And,
Lisa: um, actually happy get day. Another, um, breath test because the doctor's like, you're still not past it. So yeah, I'm gonna, you know, still keep working on it. I'm feeling a little better, but, you know, you
Marissa: sound better. Like, I mean, since the last time I talked to you last, last time we spoke was, you know, demo day.
And I know that you were having some issues that day, but you powered through and you had some great, great stuff that you were doing. And you know, you, you haven't gotten the full demo yet, right?
Lisa: No, I think it's, uh, two more weeks. Maybe outta four. Okay. Yeah.
Marissa: Yeah. You should be getting it soon. But I, I just know that you know, what you did show, showed off the skills that you have.
Um, you're gonna keep growing just like everybody else. Like it's not gonna be the only demo you ever do or have. So, you know, it's like as you are feeling. Year and back to a hundred percent. You know, it's like six months, eight months, a year down the line. You might wanna get back in there and do some other stuff.
Yeah. Or you, you know, you, you might have some work under your belt [00:08:00] where it's like, we can piece some stuff together just from that. Um, you know? Yeah. And it's, it's just gonna be, you should always be kind of utilizing the things that you're. You are doing to go ahead and, and keep showing what you're capable of.
You know, it's like,
Lisa: like
Marissa: trading. Trading, yeah. Yeah. It's like, well, I mean, 'cause think about it, you know, there's so many types of work out there. Yeah. You don't wanna be that one trick pony. It's like, oh, here's my demo and this is all I can do. It's like, no, you know, it's like I have. I have multiple different radio demos.
I can have multiple different commercial demos. I can have multiple of every other type of variety of work, podcasting, anything. Um, you know, and it is just showcasing every little thing that you are capable of. So, um, what, what steps do you feel like you wanna be able to take for yourself? Like what, what are like your first goals you think?
Lisa: So I was thinking about this after I was, uh, driving home from demo day and I thought, [00:09:00] okay, I need to apply this. I need to, you know, basically, you know, saturate into my life. Um, and I, first of all, I can't wait to hear the demo. I think that will make me feel a little more confident, hopefully. We'll see.
Um, but I definitely feel like, um. I live in Connecticut, I live near radio stations. I, I, you know, I, I just feel like there has got to be, um, a place for me where I can, um, showcase my skills or basically, you know, start at the bottom if there's, you know, anything that people need me to help with, um, you know, and just kind of get into a local business area, whatever.
I apologize for this.
No,
Marissa: you're fine.
Lisa: Yeah.
Marissa: I mean, you get to, you get to kinda work your way up and you know, I think not that location is vastly important these days [00:10:00] just because of the way technology is. Um, but, but you are in like a really great central location.
Lisa: I agree. Sorry, I had to
Marissa: It's okay. Fix
Lisa: the phone.
Marissa: Uh, no, but you are, you're in like a, just because of the spot in Connecticut, you, like, you're close to New York, you're close to Boston. Um, you know, you, you're close to some really great locations where if they did want you to, you know, come on in for a project, like you have that opportunity, you know?
Mm-hmm. And, and that is just, um, you know, a really, really awesome thing. It, I just like, I remember. People just, again, coming from the radio side of things, if somebody had a part-time opportunity in Boston or New York and they were in Albany, or they were in, you know, parts of Connecticut or wherever you would see them drive for the opportunity to be on the air because it was less about the money, it was more about the, the resume, the, the audio that you were gonna gonna have from that.
And, um. [00:11:00] Not that the money was bad. 'cause I mean, you get paid like in, uh, in that case, uh, I think it's, it's the, um, oh, what is it called? Because my, I have such, I. Concussion brain fog. Um,
Lisa: that
Marissa: was me
Lisa: this morning.
Marissa: It doesn't even matter. Um, but you, you get paid the, the talent fee, uh, opposed to, um, mm-hmm.
Just, you know, part-time wage, uh, because of the, the market that you're in. So, uh. It's just, um, you know, every, every bit of, you know, stuff that might come your way is always mm-hmm. Good too. Mm-hmm. Whether, whether it is something that's local next to you that maybe is a free project just to get your feet wet.
Yeah. Or maybe it's something much bigger. Um, you know, I think again, uh, being where you are is a really great spot. But, uh,
Lisa: yeah. And you know, it brings up a point I was thinking about the other day was, um, I used to be a member of the Milford Chamber of Commerce, which is a mile down the road and, um. Uh, I had, uh, I was on this committee, [00:12:00] um, for health and wellness because I also dabble in that as a side career.
I have a couple gigs anyway,
Marissa: same.
Lisa: A lot of gigs, the gig economy, and um, so there's a lot of business owners that make a lot of decisions that if they needed someone to do, I don't know, some type of advertisement for their business. Or, you know, just anything that would be something even live, there's so many festivals here.
There's one this weekend and the radio station covers it. Um, and then we basically, you know, um, get all of our information from there with announcements and things like that. So there is, you know, a lot of networking that I'm hoping to do. Um. You know, to, to, you know, yeah. Embed myself in this area, which you said, like you said, is rife with just so much opportunity, um, so much commerce really.
Marissa: Right. And, and you know, what's great about that too is like, it's great for voiceover, it's great for all the other [00:13:00] opportunities that you're diving yourself into and Right. And, um, you know, being, being not afraid. To have those, those conversations and introductions and, and all of that. Right. Some people really are, and, and I get it, like you, you know, you, you sure it's hard to put yourself out there, but it, it's also the best thing that you can do for yourself just because
Lisa: Yes,
Marissa: that's how the world goes round, right?
Uh, you know, it's all about the relationships and it's all about, you know, getting to know people and I mean, you form bonds and friendships and it, it's ever lasts. You know, so it's, it's a really great time in, in, in my, uh, perspective of, of the last 20 years of doing it. I've got some of the best friends from this industry that I probably have ever had.
So, um, and you know, the, again, if, if I have I trip and fall and I need some opportunity, like those, they make phone calls for me without me even realizing it sometimes. It's great.
Lisa: That's a great [00:14:00] network.
Marissa: Yeah. So if somebody is. Teetering the line, you know, they've been maybe playing around with voiceover and they're contemplating, you know, throwing in the towel, or, or maybe it's somebody who's, you know, thinking about, you know, I gotta, I've been thinking about it and I wanna venture in.
Lisa: Mm-hmm.
Marissa: What, what would your advice be when it comes to now having education? Uh, you know it,
Lisa: yeah.
Marissa: Is it worthwhile? O overall, like, what, what would you say from your side?
Lisa: You know, I just, as you know, an aside, excuse me, I come from a long line of singers and actors in my family, my family's Romanian from, and they're, they're immigrants, um, first generation, and all they did was talk and sing and network and go to church and, and met everybody, and they became well-known people and created.
Um, an album and used to sell the album. [00:15:00] So I'm from a long line of people that are, take it upon themselves, type and make it happen, um, which I love. And you know, all throughout my life, I've always been around that type of element. My sister's a professional actress in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and um, you know, so I feel like if you have any.
Anyone in your life that is involved in either the arts, um, music acting, um, you know, really should talk to them and get, get some advice about. You know, how they did what they did, because that's another career that I feel juts up against voice acting because you're, you're acting, you are, um, using your vocal range.
You're doing a lot of similar things, and I think that, you know, I. If you have the opportunity to, you know, get in with any type of group, that would be great. But also I think you just have to take [00:16:00] stock of what you want in your life. It was time for me, I wanted to do something outta my comfort zone, um, and basically, you know, wanted to find something else to do career-wise.
I'm still gonna be. A consultant, um, for my day job, and yet this is something I look forward to. It's fun. I feel, um, you know, like I am contributing in a different way. I feel better about the fact that I took this leap and pro had had proven it to myself that I could do something that I'd never done. Um, and I feel like you have to be ready for that and to put the time in and put the work in.
And if you believe in yourself. I really did feel like this was something that I manifested possibly over the years or just something that, you know, when you get to a point in your life where you want to, um, branch out a little bit more of what you're doing day to day. I, [00:17:00] I think it's fantastic and it's any age group, um, and anyone that really wants to, you know, take on something that I think is fun and I think is.
Easily, um, learnable if you have some raw talent, and I think that, you know, this program itself is the best blueprint I could have imagined. It was very straightforward. It went through everything so specifically to learn about the industry, about what types of potential opportunity there is. I, I thought it was fantastic, and I'm so grateful to have been part of it.
Marissa: Well, we're, we're glad that you could have been too. And, you know, just to, to hit on one thing that you said is like, if you want the time, timing to be right, um, yeah. You know, but the thing is, sometimes you're talking yourself out of it and you're, you're making yourself feel like the [00:18:00] timing isn't right.
So if it's, if it's gravitationally pulling you. There's a reason for it. Right. And, and I'm a firm believer that you're on the path that you're meant to if you're being pulled in a direction, head down that road. Because it's what led me to voice coaches, which is what led me to all the opportunities that have been put in front of me.
And, you know, I had to, I had to work at Lowe's briefly to get to all of it. You know what I mean? It's like you just, yeah. You take the steps that are in front of you, whether it makes sense in the moment or not, and it's all leading you down to where you're supposed to be. And if you're getting pulled in this direction, then
Lisa: yeah,
Marissa: you know, just, you know, don't, don't pull back just
Lisa: and set small goals.
Don't, you know, don't conquer the world right away and you work your way into it.
Marissa: Exactly. Nobody, nobody can. Um, so well listen, Lisa, I am wishing you all the best. Um, you know, I know once you get that demo to Georgia, [00:19:00] uh, once, once you get the demo, you are gonna have that additional confidence boost and um, you know, anytime that we can help you along the way, you just holler at us as I tell everybody.
'cause you've got us the longevity that you want to be doing this. And, uh, you know, we're, we're proud of what you've accomplished so far. And this is just the beginning. So thank
Lisa: you so much Marissa. Yeah,
Marissa: of course. You're very welcome. Georgia, anything that you'd like to add? No. Okay. Just think is okay.
Silent.
Lisa: I wish you both well and I hope to, uh, talk to you soon.
Marissa: Yes. Well listen everybody, we got a brand new episode coming at you next week. If you've got any questions you want us to tackle here on the pod [email protected] and stay safe everybody. I've got so many puppy kisses.
