Voice Coaches Radio #680 – Staying Up To Date
[00:00:00] Voice coaches radio, everything voiceover.
Marissa: It's Friday yet again and we've got a brand new episode of Voice Coaches Radio upon us. My name is Marissa and we are past 4th of July. We're almost, God, we are almost halfway through July already. Why does it go so fast? Uh, I like that is where? I want the summer to slow down.
There's a country song about that. I think, uh, you know, I hope you're enjoying yourself though. I've been a very accomplished human being. I think I've mentioned a couple of the things that I've been tackling lately. Like the patio's done, the deck is done. Uh, you know, trying to watch a movie out in the yard, we gotta figure out the best way to accommodate 'cause like.
I don't know. The bugs are just like awful this season. So we went out and uh, next thing you know, we're getting all bit up. Uh, as of right now, the Amazon Prime deals are still going on, so I might have to go and find something, a little hut or something to put us in. But uh, that being said, I also just put up a new basketball [00:01:00] hoop.
My dad was helping me, and let me tell you. I would've loved a, like a voice instructional on that. Uh, because that was quite the experience. It, we, we ended up putting it backwards. So he had to come back and like retool some things with me and, uh, whew, never again, but at least I won't have to now for a while.
Right. Uh, so just, just the summer to-dos. Uh, I was in the midst of also just kind of just researching certain things. You know, these are. Very simple tasks that as somebody in voiceover, you should be consistently doing. And it's just like little things all the time, right? It's like spend, spend some time to practice one day, spend some time to reach out to people another day.
Maybe it's spending some time putting together a home studio space for yourself another couple days, and then. [00:02:00] Always make sure that you are staying on top of what's happening in the industry. You know, what, what are the trends that are happening right now? What? What's key? Your performance that you need to be aware of to, to go ahead and then knock it outta the park when the next audition comes around, you know?
And it doesn't take a long time to go and do this research, right? It's, it's all about the evolving styles of what's happening within the industry and, and keeping, um, you know, up to date with all the new technologies. And then, like, you know, the, the. Audience it itself, uh, for everything that you are doing.
So. What do you do? You have to go ahead and whether it's educating yourself a little more by getting involved with the new technology, it could be a matter of just studying up on your own [00:03:00] through YouTube, you know, tutorials. Or maybe there is a local class so you know how to use certain things. Um, you know, but the, these are very vital to keeping yourself.
Like relevant and now, um, you know, so you never, ever, ever wanna stop learning, you know, it, it, that is such a key. I can't even begin to like, get you to understand just how important that is. You know, as somebody who, I mean, I've been heavily in the radio industry think of how different that. Sounds nowadays, you don't have people coming up and talking like this anymore and just try to yell in your face and all these things.
It's not like the big like booming guy anymore that's like way too excited. It's real people. It's real people having real conversations. It just with a big old smile most of the time, you know? Um, [00:04:00] and I mean, you've heard it happen with commercials over the years, right? I mean, it was a very similar sort of situation.
I mean, at one point it was just, it was just that big booming voice. If that person stayed that way, they weren't going tra to transition into the work of, of now, like that it can work here and there if that's what somebody is looking for. You know what I mean? Like it has to have its time and its purpose.
So you know, you have to make sure that you are following suit with what is out there, whether it's. Pacing, whether it's tone, like I was just mentioning, the delivery change, right? And freshening and sharpening, sharpening these skills to meet exactly what people are expecting of you. Whether it's casting directors, producers, copywriters, like whoever.
Um, so that, that's what you really wanna make sure that you are [00:05:00] doing. And there's a number of ways it's just, you know, maybe it's. Joining certain groups, maybe it's, you know, uh, there might be like an acting troop that's around you that could be helpful. Um, you know, but the education and staying with it and staying involved and staying updated is so, so incredibly important.
And you wanna also just kind of make sure. That you're following, not just, not just one sector of it all. You know, like if you wanna keep yourself expanding and growing and having that additional potential, you really need to be, you know, keeping up to date with, with multiple genres. Like what's happening with the indu industrial and, and like training side of things.
What's, what's happening with other educational material and documentary type stuff? How. How are they going about in doing audio books differently than maybe they were a couple years ago? All of these things are so incredibly important. 'cause what it [00:06:00] does is it sets you up for success for what's to come for yourself, right?
So you wanna just make sure that just, just like things have changed so much for like your kids in school, you know, the constant change of things. It is just, well, I mean, it is, it's constant. It's always, nobody likes change, but we do have to roll with the punches. Uh, you know, if you're not pivoting like I've suggested before, then you're gonna get stuck.
You know, it's just, it's almost inevitable that you will get stuck if you don't continue to, to move with, with the community, with the trend. Um, it's just gonna set you up for success, like I said. So, um. Other things that can really help you in, in the way that you are doing things is, you know, really sharpening the, the self-directing that you can give yourself and.[00:07:00]
I have spoken about this before and I, I tell students, I mean, I probably told three or four students today the importance of recording yourself and listening back, and if you're not doing it, you're doing yourself a disservice because. It is truly the only thing that you have to really understand what you're doing, especially if you're new.
You haven't built the ear for it yet, otherwise you have to listen and as uncomfortable as it can be, guess what you start to get to do. You get to start to really understand what needs to change. You're able to critique yourself. You're able to quote self-direct. You're able to improve things simply by listening and, and then guess what happens, right?
As you're doing things, as you're listening back more and more, you are developing that ear, [00:08:00] you're building that ear up. You get to trust what you're doing. You get to. Trust, trust your instincts a bit. I always say it's like so much better when you hear somebody that is literally just going and trusting their gut.
Uh, because your gut, your gut is a good guide. When we're starting though, our gut can really be toying with our emotions. 'cause you, you feel it. You wanna believe it, right? You wanna think, oh, I'm totally making the right choice. And then you question that ever loving heck outta yourself and you make the next choice, and then you go.
And maybe that's when you listen back and you're like, I don't know. I don't, I don't think that sounds right. You should have went with the first one, that first gut instinct. You've got to trust your instincts and. Blistering back can really, really help in molding that, in allowing you to find [00:09:00] that ear and find your voice.
It doesn't just happen like some people think, ah, well she was just born with a natural ability. I mean, maybe, but it's still like needed to be honed and like. Developed and polished, right? Like Mariah Carey didn't come out. Just hitting that note and knowing what note she was hitting. Like even if she has perfect pitch or whatever, like, you know, she still needed to kind of be able to work with somebody and, and get that guidance and understanding of.
Of the education behind what she was doing and what she does. And now Diva got a new album coming out. Uh, but that's besides the point. But, um, you know, you wanna go ahead and, and really just keep, keep being that sponge. Keep absorbing every ounce of knowledge that you can and like keep allowing yourself to grow and get better.
Stay on trend, keep learning, keep absorbing the news and. [00:10:00] Keep listening. You know, it's the best suggestions I can give you in, in this moment, in, in this topic. Um, you know, it, it seems like it's so simple. Um, but you gotta make the time for it all right? And life can be really, really busy, and I understand that.
So as long as you're giving yourself God, even 15, 20 minutes maybe in a day. To go ahead and, and research and educate and see what's happening and, you know, pop into this group and see what's going on here and watching this YouTube tour tutorial and, you know, doing this amount of practice and listening back and critiquing myself and then doing this amount of practice again, like the repetition of all of it.
Is what's gonna keep you going in the right direction, uh, anytime that we can be of service. Well, me, me, specifically [email protected], don't be a stranger. Feel free to reach out with questions and uh, you know, anything that you want discussed on the po I will gladly so [00:11:00] [email protected], we will have a brand new episode coming your way, coming up next week as we head.
Well, truly into the middle of July and to me, wondering where the heck the summer is going. But uh, in the meantime, enjoy this, uh, upcoming summer weekend and we will talk again next week. Stay safe, everybody.
