Voice Coaches Radio #679 – Starting Over
[00:00:00] Voice coaches radio, everything voiceover.
Marissa: Welcome to a brand new episode of Voice Coaches Radio. My name is Marissa. I'm a whole year older than the last episode we talked, and, uh, I don't have a party yet on or anything, but, um, you know, I'm, I'm raring to go. I'm, I'm ready to celebrate and continue celebrating and, uh, because my birthday was.
On a Tuesday. That's like a really weird day to celebrate. Uh, but we, uh, we did go and have a beach day, uh, well, lake day, we'll call it, but there was a, a beach attached to it, so there's that. Um, but uh, you know, it's been like excessive, excessive heat this week and so much humidity that the best way I can really describe it is if you've ever been like in a sauna, and how you just sit there and start sweating.
Yeah, that, [00:01:00] that's exactly how it was, uh, from like, I don't know, last Saturday or Friday through yesterday. And, uh, and then I got up today and I went outside for the first time and I was like, oh, Burr thi this is, it's chilly out. And it, in reality, it was like 78, uh, but it had been so unbearably hot that.
That now felt so, uh, so different. Uh, you know, so I'm gonna probably enjoy at least the next couple days, uh, while it's cooled down a little bit. The best thing is the humidity being gone. Like, if it was as hot as it was without the humidity, it probably wouldn't have been as bad, but it was just, uh, it was a lot.
So there was a, a good pool day, a good lake day. Um, and then like I did. I was really stupid, right? Don't do this if it's like really hot by you at any point. Like don't, don't be the person that goes and [00:02:00] mows the lawn and pulls all the weeds and then like power washes the flower box when the heat index is triple digits.
Like, don't do that. I also played a softball game that same day. This is why, you know, the next day, I'm wondering why. Feel like garbage. Oh God, I feel like I'm gonna throw up, uh, my body hurts. Like, 'cause you're stupid Marissa. That's why. Um, no, I'm not that stupid. I just, I also realized like the moment this heat breaks, it's probably gonna be pouring and just disgusting weather.
And if I don't do this stuff now, like it's not gonna get done. And I, I go to Plymouth Mass this weekend to go see some friends and um, you know, it's like the summer does this, right? It's like you're on a weird cycle of. Not your normal routine. Uh, and and that's like exactly why I brought up the, the episode from last week in the way that I did.
Because you're gonna have people like me that are probably gonna be a little all over the place and, you know, their emails might not get, be like, might not get answered [00:03:00] as quickly as you'd like, or you might not get the answers as quickly as you'd like for certain things or the same kind of turnaround that you might normally get.
Um, I try to be as. As on top of everything as I can be. But then, uh, you know, life kind of gets in the way, but it's just because in, in New York State, let's face it, we only get so much of this beautiful weather, even if it is Blazen, blazen hot. Um, that being said, I was having a conversation with a student, kind of, you know, off the, off the books the other day that.
I think it's very important, you know, there's a lot of people that are in her position, and I'm not gonna call her out by name. Uh, you know, I, I wanna at least allow that, that bit of, uh, you know, privacy. But, you know, she's somebody who is very driven, is very motivated, but is also been very knocked down and I think probably taken advantage of.
And her success is, is something that she can hold onto. [00:04:00] But the confidence is now something that, that kind of needs to be rebuilt. And, um, you know, I've been that person. I, I know what that feels like. I've been knocked down many, many times. It's not a fun situation. I'm somebody who. You know, it's like our parents when we're growing up, they're like, if you work hard and you do good work, then you will be successful and you know you will be appreciated by your employer and blah, blah blah.
And that's not always the case, you know, not these days. You know, it's like our grandparents, um. You know, and then like, you know, maybe their, their parents, not necessarily my parents, um, but you know, they were able to, to get that job outta school and like didn't have to necessarily go to college. And, and they were able to have that job from the moment they got it till the moment they decided they didn't want anymore and they were gonna retire and they would get like a watch for 50 years of service and like whatever, and, and have a great pension and all these things.
And, and we, we, these days we have to fight for [00:05:00] everything that we have. Sometimes that fight, just like eventually you, you are like so sick of fighting and I get it, but you have to keep going, right? Like you have to keep up that fight even when you feel like you're ready to wave that flag and, uh, and give on in because who else is gonna fight for you?
Like, I mean, you will definitely have people in your corner. I've had people in my corner for the entire time, I've been doing everything I've been doing, and they are amazing people and I love them so much because like there have been moments where I have just felt like, how, how did this happen? Uh, you know, but then.
Without me even realizing it. They're making phone calls and, and you know, having conversations and, and trying to help get me to where I need to be next. And it's just like really beautiful moments when you have some really good people in, in your corner. But you know, what I'm getting at is at some point, and maybe this is you right now as well, [00:06:00] you might be in, in a start over period and it may.
Be scaring the ever loving bejesus out of you right now. And, and I get it. I totally understand. I've been there, I've been that person. You know, I, I haven't necessarily started a new career per se, but, but I've been that person and more than once, and it's really, really challenging to wrap your head around the.
I, I guess like the thing that you're least expecting, which is like all of a sudden here you were wildly successful at whatever you were doing, and then somebody else maybe ruins it for you. Or like, in my case, I became a budget cut one. Not once, but, but like, uh, a bunch of times. Um, you know, it's like the numbers [00:07:00] matter, even if they aren't all that great and big.
Um, but. You know, in, in the case of the student that I was talking with, you know, she was somebody who was very, very, very successful in the field that she has been in. And not like raking in tons and tons of money for herself, but for the companies that she's worked for. And then it's like, because of that success, you know what can happen.
Sometimes somebody else looks at you like you're a threat, and then, and then all of a sudden she finds herself completely outta work. And in a situation where she's, she's being like blackballed from getting other opportunities in the industry that she's been in. And, and isn't that weird? When, when you've done nothing wrong other than be successful and be good at what you do and somebody else just can't stand it?
Oh God. Like some people just don't grow up is what it comes down to. It's the reality. Um, so, you know, she's in this process. [00:08:00] She has been in this process of trying to just get back on her feet again and figure out how to do that and what she needs to do. And she's been, you know, going and facing all these different paths and avenues and just trying to, you know, see where her, her puzzle piece fits and, and it's like roadblocks every time she turns around.
So then she's here and she's. She's got her first class and she's with me. And I can just, I can tell that there's something going on and I, I can't, you know, I'm, I'm usually a pretty good read of people, you know, and I, I could just tell like, something something's going on and maybe it was nerves, you know, 'cause that happens sometimes.
Class one, whatever. But there was more to it and she was really, she would hold herself back. And, you know, it's, it's again that, that, that confidence that was, was. Crushed along the way. And you know, the questioning of like, [00:09:00] is this what I'm supposed to do? I just don't know. And I, you know, I will tell you, and I, I, I told her, I'm like, listen, I, I've heard everything that you've said, and what I can tell you right now is you're looking everywhere else, but you've gotta look right in front of you.
And everything is telling me as the outsider. You're about to be your own boss, whether it's voiceover or not. I mean, you know, it probably will be voiceover in some kind of capacity, but I have a feeling that she's gonna be able to do whatever the hell she wants. It's just a matter, it's a matter of sometimes like getting out of our own head for a bit and, and starting to map out things for ourselves in black and white so we can kind of like.
Really see the big picture of it all. And I mean, it's a scary process. Like when I was let go and my contract wasn't renewed, uh, in [00:10:00] Boston back in 2019, they were getting rid of the night show and that was my title, even though I did everything else there. Um, you know, it's, it's no fault of my own and I can know that and I can, I can, you know, still walk away being confident yet, you know, being knocked down still as well.
But what I did was a number of things, but I, while I was still investigating what was gonna be next for me within the industry that I had been so prevalent in, I also started to look at all the skills that that industry had given me and all the things that I enjoy doing in life and what that could then branch out into.
That I could become my own business in a, in a separate way. You know, it was me looking at, not necessarily a backup plan, but like the ultimate [00:11:00] side gig, if you will, because it could be the ultimate side gig gig that becomes the larger opportunity depending on, you know, which way I was gonna go about it and, you know, had, had life not gotten so crazy.
I was onto something, I really was. Um, you know, but it was like that build back after the pandemic. Like I had to go ahead and I had to, you know, make some choices. And it was, it was hard because then life got really, really busy. Um, but. I don't even know if I've talked about this necessarily, um, on the pod, but like, you know, one of the things that I always have like been for a lot of people is, is an ear and just like I was for this student, you know, it's like sometimes people just need somebody that's gonna listen and bounce something off of, and I've always been that person since I was a kid.
I don't know why. It's just always been a thing. Um, but I had also just gone through this really. Lengthy healing process myself, mentally and, and physically and emotionally. And I [00:12:00] learned a lot of things, um, a lot of like different ways of, of coping with like, you know, trauma and anxiety and, and all this.
And I'm like, you know what? I think I need to be able to put these things together along with my communication skills and, you know, I gotta like, educate myself. And, and the way I decided, I, I took some online courses to. Strengthened my, my life coaching skills. I started a business, I got an LLC with it and everything in Massachusetts.
And you know, that was how I, I had a website. I had all of it. Like I was starting that business as we got into 2020. And you know, I launched it I think maybe at the end of February. And then, you know, what happens is like obviously COVID took over and little did I realize though, that was. That spawned that business.
'cause everybody needed somebody and I ended up being that person for a lot of people. And you know, that really ended up working out a lot for me because it proved a lot as well. It taught me a lot. It made me understand [00:13:00] that I am good at at that as well. And that could always be an avenue that I can explore down the line.
I would like to figure out. A little bit more with that. 'cause I mean, I just know like therapists and, and life coaches, they, it's hard to separate. So like you end up. With your own stuff, but you end up like wearing a lot of other people's stuff as well. And that can be very heavy. Um, but you know, it really was, um, an interesting time and it felt really good to be able to help people.
And, and then again, like life just got kind of crazy. And then it was like this opportunity was coming, this one, this one, this one. And then I started with voice coaches and then I was doing this. And so it's like, you know, there's only so much that you can do in a day, but me explaining all of this. I want this to be something that you can think about too, because yes, voiceover is something that you can explore and you can start looking at all of the, the, the things that may be in your past career [00:14:00] that have led you here, but like can be an asset to, to this field that can be an asset to.
You're skill building and you are, you are reading out loud and, and all of that, that can get you to the next level in voiceover. 'cause there's so many people that will come in and they're like, I just don't know if I'm supposed to be here. I just like, I've always wanted to, but I just don't know. And it's like, well listen, I guarantee that you already have some built in skillset.
You just don't even realize it because you just think you don't. You're telling yourself you don't. But what if you get out of your own head for five minutes? Start writing some stuff down. What has your job, your career allowed you to grow? What kind of skills maybe you've had to do, like, you know, in-office presentations before you did a lot of that, or maybe.
You know, you had to hold conference calls and, you know, hold people's attention, um, you know, to get certain point across rather quickly and whatever. Like, I mean, [00:15:00] think like really open up yourself, open up your brain and, and allow yourself to be able to see all of the qualities that you hold that can allow you to excel in this as well.
Uh, you know, 'cause I think that's, that's what's really scary for a lot of people is this is new. This is something they wanna explore. But, but, but what if, like, what if I'm, what if I'm not good enough? What if I don't have what it takes? Only you can really, truly understand and know what your capabilities are, but in this moment, you might actually not be able to know those things until you really, really dig deep down and you search inside yourself and you think about all the true qualities that you hold.
If you have been confident in the work that you have been doing, you can be just as confident in this as well. But you've gotta get yourself to that point. [00:16:00] Like nobody starts, like if you start off confident, that's, that's probably cockiness, that's ego. That doesn't mean that you're good. It means you think you're good.
Um, you know, and there's a big difference. You gotta work your way. To your skill. You gotta work your way to your growth in the, in your ability. But if you've been able to do something like that in another field, there's most certainly a a way for you to do that here as well. And, you know, that's, that's the thing, you know, talking to this student, I know she wants to do this and I really feel like she can, and, and her background has given her a lot of opportunity and ability to have exactly what she needs to do this.
And I think, you know, if anything. She's gonna be able to, you know, work with this, but also be working with something else. And she's about to spread her wings. She's about to fly and soar more than she could ever imagine. And I think, you know, step one was, was taking a, a couple seconds [00:17:00] to, to ask if I would talk with her and, and have somebody that she doesn't really know, see, see the passion that she holds, see the emotion that she's feeling, and.
Allow herself that step for, to, to have that moment of uncomfortable, like uncomfortable feeling to, to get to, um, step outta that, that box that she's been in. Um, you know, and that could be exactly what you needed to hear today too. And that's why I just like, wanna share certain stories that happen because we're all going through stuff and we're, we're all.
We're all always going through something similar, but different. I think, you know, and I realized that more in the pandemic than any other time. You know, that was a prime example of us all going through the same thing, but having a little bit different of an experience. You know, that experience affected some people in a very great way, more so than, than some other people.
Um, [00:18:00] and you know, it's like I really do truly believe that. If you're about to start over or you're not necessarily starting over, you're holding onto whatever you have until you can grow into something else. It's right here. It's right here, and it's waiting for you. It's what you're gonna put into it that is going to allow you to soar as well.
So let this be a little motivation going into your weekends. Um, I think that we are probably gonna be off next week because it is gonna be the 4th of July. I don't get my birthday off, but I get the, you know, independence day. You know, uh, we gotta, gotta have some fireworks and stuff, but, uh, corn, dogs, whatever, uh, go America.
But, um, listen, enjoy your weekends. You know, enjoy the summer breaks if you've got it going on. Enjoy your vacations and stuff. And, uh, I'll be back with you in just a couple weeks as we go ahead and, uh, have some more voiceover talk. All right? But if you, you need somebody to bounce something off of, you get a question, whatever, Marissa, at voice coaches.com, I am just an [00:19:00] email away and, uh, I'll be talking to you soon.
Stay safe, everybody.

This week on Voice Coaches Radio, Marissa had a conversation recently with someone that’s in the “starting over” phase. It happens to the best of us and it happens more frequently these days than ever before. You’re forced to pivot, even when you don’t necessarily want to and your confidence is damaged along the way. But, what you’ve done and what you can do can be greater than anything you’ve ever done before.
