Voice Coaches Radio #676 – Daunting Shmaunting
Voice coaches radio, everything voiceover.
Welcome to another episode of Voice Coaches Radio. My name is Marissa and, uh, you know, baseball fans have at it opening season. It was yesterday for us, uh, you know, here in upstate New York. Uh, I am, you know, coming at you on March 28th here officially. And, uh. I know that it was a good day if you were like a Yankees and Red Sox fan.
It was not that great of a day if you were a Mets fan. You know, we've got no like hometown ties necessarily in this area. So there's a, a variety of fan bases, but those I think are the three big teams. We have actually somebody locally who, I think they've been in the major leagues now for about 10 years, a native of Latham, New York, who is back on the team that drafted him back in 2014.
And, um. God, his last name's Hoffman, but uh, yeah, he's on the Toronto Blue Jays. Uh, their first game was awful. They lost by like 10, so I don't know if he had anything to do with that. But, uh, hey, it's, the season's still young. There's hundreds of games left to be played, uh, but hey, I hope you're feeling good.
It's also, by the way, today, national Children's Picture Book day. You know, lots of people get into. This field, especially because they want to go ahead and do things that are a little bit more fun, that are kids related. Picture books don't require a whole lot from us, but, uh, still, you know, it's just, uh, something to, you know, highlight and, you know, honor, I, I just feel like we, we do, we have a lot of really just cool opportunities here in voiceover.
And, you know what, I wanted to go ahead and, and dive on into here a little bit. Yeah, we have some resources that are very easily accessible to you, whether you're a voice coach's students or, or not. Obviously, you know, you're here listening to the podcast, uh, but we've got different like warmups and stuff that you can do.
If you go to our website, voice coaches.com, you know, along the. Right hand side, there's a button that says menu. If you scroll down, you know you're gonna end up seeing one that says resources, you know, go ahead, click on that. And that is where you'll find that. And, uh, you know, some basics on home recording and, and those kind of things as well.
You know, everybody has to start somewhere and why not start a little bit? For free with, with us. Uh, you know what I mean? Like, like that's the, the first step is just, you know, trying to get a little bit of knowledge into your brain. And once you're ready, I mean, hit us up. 'cause we'll gladly go ahead and educate you further and get you into the studio to record a demo and all those kind of things.
Uh, I had a student earlier today, shout out to Kia. She's in southern Georgia. We kind of bonded 'cause I'm on a radio station. The area that her parents live. I believe it was in Val Valdosta. Uh, it's the Albany, Georgia area, which is just odd considering I'm in Albany, New York, uh, you know, where I live.
But, um, she was a little bit concerned, you know, and, and I had a student right before her that was also a little bit concerned. You know, you look at the idea of narrative work and it seems like it's gonna be so much fun, and it is, but. It's, it's looking at the length of things and trying to wrap your head around all the things that you need to ask yourself.
And like those questions that you ask that you need to answer that can feel so daunting and so challenging. And, you know, we've discussed, like, if you think back to Valentine's Day, uh, we discussed making sure that you're ready. For whatever the material might be. Uh, you know, if it's a little bit more on the erotic side and you're diving into some romance novels and that makes you a little squeamish, uh, then you know, you might not be ready to do that.
You know, just like somebody who really wants to do kid stuff, but they're so nervous about, you know, being. Highly animated and very excited and, you know, very bright and, and you know, just kinda over the top, like not everybody's there yet. And uh, if it's something that you want to do, then you just kind of have to work yourself in that direction to, to build up the.
I don't know. Confidence or just like acceptance of like how it needs to be done and, and allow yourself the ability and, and the fun. Uh, 'cause it is all of it. Maybe not the erotica stuff. I'm not into that either myself, but that, you know, that's neither here or there. But you know, the big question she had, Kia was looking at an audio book knowing that.
An adult story. It, it's usually hundreds of pages. How in the world am I gonna know what to bring to this if I don't have the time to sit down and read it first myself? And, and I had to like, you know, just really, I. Kind of just allow her to understand that this all does get easier in time. It's, it's kind of like, think about the jobs that you've had and how daunting whatever task may have seemed in the beginning.
And then how, back at the hand it ends up being, I don't know, even a couple months in, you know, I'm not gonna say that voiceover is, is that in the way that in a couple months you're gonna be like, perfect at this job, right? You're gonna get better. And a couple months from there, you're gonna get even better.
And, you know, a couple years from then, I mean, you're gonna be in a totally different league and it's all in what you're doing and putting forward, uh, to allow yourself that growth. Now, let's face it, I mean, audio books. There's, there's a really good chance that you've auditioned in order to get that gig, right?
Like, if, if you're not auditioning to get the gig, you probably, then it was like word of mouth of, you know, your name getting passed around and you know, I, I'm sure that you kind of know what you're getting yourself into, you know, so at the very least, you're gonna have like an overall synopsis of whatever the book might be.
Like about, you know, what that story is, what genre is it? Uh, you know, tho those, those things are gonna be right in front of you. Um, you know, and again, you audition for the piece, for, for that project, you're gonna be auditioning with part of said book. So, I mean, like that person that author that.
Production company, like whatever, like they wanna make sure that you fit what they're looking for, what their overall goal is. If this is something that you are recording from home, I mean. Maybe you've got a due date, maybe the due date is two weeks from now. Maybe that gives you plenty of time to be able to read the whole thing.
If not, not the whole thing. Maybe it's at least a chunk of it that it gives you a better idea, so that way when you do kind of go ahead and start, uh, you're not feeling so heavy and like weighted down because your, your nerves are kind of getting in the way, if that makes sense. I don't know. For me, I found myself.
You know, because maybe I haven't had the chance to read it ahead of time. Like all of a sudden, like, not only am I creating the story and bringing it to life, but like I'm in it. Like, I'm not just like in it, but I'm like, I'm hooked and I am in it in the way of a reader of like, well, what is coming next?
Um, you know, so it's, it's like you kind of get to entertain somebody else. In the big picture of things, but you're entertaining yourself along for the ride. Um, kind of beautiful moment, you know, when you think about it. But, uh, you know, the other thing to always consider too, you know, you're always learning and, and that's where you're gonna be, uh, the most successful.
Honestly, like, I mean, when you're constantly educating yourself in order to get better, whether it is. The way to present your audio books, or maybe it's in the editing process if you are doing this from home. I mean, that's something a lot of people tend to kind of forget about that. Yeah. You are probably gonna have to edit whatever you are doing and then submit, uh, to, to the company that you're doing this for.
You know, these, these learning. Tools and, and curves and whatever. It's all really, really beneficial to you in the long run. It, it's just going to allow you to be that much more successful in the field. So, so don't allow yourself to be too scared to move forward. Dive in head first, like, I mean, seriously, what is the worst thing that's gonna happen?
What you, you didn't, you weren't able to give your absolute a hundred percent best. Whatever you just learned a whole lot and you're gonna be that much better for whatever the next project is. And from there on out, just keep learning. It's like Dory from, you know, finding Nemo. Just, just keep swimming, just keep learning, you know?
And don't tell yourself that you can't. You most certainly can. I've got the faith in you. You need to have the faith in yourself. Um, and uh, just get ready to have a whole lot of fun. Audio books are a blast. Uh, if you've got anything that you want us to discuss here on the pod, of course it is just an email away.
[email protected], MARI, [email protected]. Hit me up and uh, we've got a brand new episode that is gonna be coming at you next week. Enjoy this final weekend of March and stay safe everybody.

This week on Voice Coaches Radio, Marissa chats about a conversation she had with a recent student over audiobooks. She loves listening to them and it is why she wanted to get into the field, but now thinking about actually voicing one is throwing her for a loop.
