Voice Coaches Radio #669 – It’s National Fun at Work Day!
Voice coaches, radio, everything voiceover. Here we are. We've made it. It is the end of January. It has been the longest month, I think, in history, uh, and way too many things. Have happened that are on my bingo card for 2025 that I was not expecting to happen. In fact, I'm like one away. I'm cased for bingo.
I'm one away from a big win. Uh, and I don't necessarily wanna win because it just means there's been a whole lot of crap so far this year, you know what I mean? Um, and uh, to go along with that, the neurovirus has hit my household and it's, it's not. It's not me yet. And please God, if you, if you pray, if you manifest, if you can just send some positivity this way that I don't, I'm knocking on wood right now.
Uh, 'cause I, it skipped me last time. And it, it better skip me this time. Uh, 'cause I just, I, I can't, like, I'm panicked about it as it is. Um, so lots of vitamin C, lots of hand washing, lots of laundry, uh, you know, just to make sure that, that I stay free and clear. Um, but, uh, yeah, it has been a crazy year so far.
And hopefully, uh, you have been dealing with some crazy, but maybe in a, a good and positive way, uh, today. Today happens to be national fun at Workday and, uh, you know how fitting here, especially on a Friday, um, you know, honestly fun at Workday is, is every day when you're doing what you love. And I've been talking, talking to so many students recently where, you know, they, they want the change and they, they want something different.
And they look at this and they, they look at it like it's gonna be fun. And here, here's what I'll tell you is. At the end of the day, when you look at voiceover, it is a job. Like, I don't want you to get any kind of things twisted here. Okay. 'cause it is a job. So like what I'm getting at is you can make it feel heavy and you can make it feel like work, and you can kind of forget why you wanted to do it all in the first place.
If you're putting way too much pressure on yourself, and it's very, very. Very easy to get there. Uh, you know, because let's face it, what happens? What do we do to ourselves? We talk so miserably to ourselves, like we are so awful. Like, if we, if we talk to ourselves, like we talk to our best friends or, you know, our, our sisters, our brothers, our family, um, guess what I mean?
We would feel so much better and lighter and confident in what we're doing and. It's just, it's hard to break that habit, but we just, we have to try and, you know, I, I'm guilty of it myself. Uh, you know, there's been plenty of times where I've gotten in my own way a bit, but then I've also, I. Made sure that I've kept my eyes and ears open for the positive.
Right. And not just with what I'm hearing, but what other people are saying. You know, because like you hear something sometimes and you're like, well, but did they mean that? And it's like, well, why? Why are you not gonna believe them if they're paying you a compliment? People don't just need to blow smoke, especially if you've done a job and you've done it well and you're getting that kind of reception like.
The listen, you just got paid for that. Like, they're not going to blow smoke. They are going to have you correct something if they don't like it. Uh, you know what I mean? So you've gotta make sure that you're allowing yourself to, to hold on and, and grab hold and, you know, really just like immerse yourself in, in the, you know, positive stuff.
Um, but again, it's challenging. Many people put a lot of things off as well. And you know, I'm, I'm guilty of that too. I will, I will admit it. You know, part of this though, 'cause what I'm gonna tell you is like, I, I was on a consistent workout routine for so long and then life just got kind of crazy and, you know, my fiance had moved in and, and like the schedule kind of changes and shifts because we're trying to work with each other.
And I built a gym. In the house, but it's in the breezeway that goes from the basement to the garage, which means there's no heat, there's no vents, there's nothing that goes into into that. And you know, this time of the year, especially, even though I insulated the heck out of it, it is so, so cold and it's really hard to get out there and, and, uh, you know, get on the treadmill when it's like that.
So trying to figure out a way to bring it inside, uh, that is, that is. A process because the ceilings are low in the basement. It's really the only place it can be. Uh, but you know, we, we tend to kind of put things off. So my workout routine has been kind of pushed to the side for a moment. Um, you know, and you may have started this year thinking, I really, I want to go ahead and I want to go for this, and maybe you did take a step.
Maybe you are in the midst of whether it's taking classes with us at voice coaches or, or you know, just. Listening to podcasts about voiceover or, or whatever. Um, you know, maybe you've taken that step, but you haven't gotten as far as you want. You know, you've gotta look at what's holding you back. You know, is it just you?
Is it time constraint? Is it potential fear of failure? That's. Not necessarily in your brain immediately, but could be like deep down subconscious wise, you know, there's that, that worry that what you're gonna do is when you take that step that you're going to not just let yourself down, but let others down.
And I can understand that if like the success doesn't follow, but like here's what I will tell you. The only way to know is to do, and I truly am that firm believer that like, if you are putting the right amount of effort in. Then you're going to see positive change that comes from it. It's like it's, it's like building a snowman, right?
When you start making that initial snowball and you start rolling it and rolling it and rolling it, it gets bigger and bigger and better, and like it, you know, you're able to build each layer. It's the same thing here. If you're in California, you might not get that reference. 'cause there are some people that just don't know snow.
Um, actually the, the woman that I talked to from Spectrum the other day was from Texas. She's like, is it snowing in New York? I'm like, uh, yeah, actually it is right now. Uh, it is cold. Uh, you know, it happens. Um, but so think about that though. Like each step that you take. Is another layer that is added on to the skill that you're developing and, and those, you know, movements forward to progress.
Uh, but it, it just, it's one of those things where nobody else can put one foot in front of the other for you. You know, like we can go ahead and we can cheer you on from the sidelines and, and we can go ahead and, you know, we can. Ask you questions about it and, um, you know, be supportive, but you are gonna be the one that really has to look at what, okay, what do I want?
What's holding me back and how do I, how do I like break free from that? It might be a matter like it was for me initially, and it's stepping outside the comfort zone. Boy is that tough. So many times we get into a field like this or something that does involve learning a skill. Like think about it, like maybe it's picking up an instrument for the first time and then you've learned it, but now it's taking the step to actually, you know, do a open mic night.
That's frightening for so many people because you, you have this instant fear of failure and, and I get it, you know, being the person that I was growing up. Nobody expected me to like get into a field of entertainment and like, you know, potentially being in front of thousands of people at a time, you know, doing what I do in so many ways.
Even just being behind a mic and being in a booth by myself and performing in front of just one other person made. People that I went to high school with go, yeah, okay, good luck with that. You know, like it just wasn't, I was so, so shy and like really, you know, maybe had been funny and sarcastic and you know, like, good with my people, but like not.
Anybody else. Uh, you know, so it's, it's one of those things where we really do kind of have to rip the bandaid sometimes. And, uh, you know, if you're feeling like, how can I make sure that I'm having fun at work every single day and it doesn't really feel like work, like, you know, it is going to potentially take some, some hard steps to get there.
And like, again, that's how it was for me. But the hard steps were so worth it. So, you know, this is one of those moments where. As we wind down this first month of 2025, I want you to, to ask yourself the hard questions. You know, it's like, okay, well I've, I've taken this one first step here where I'm listening to Marissa talk about voiceover in this podcast, about voiceover.
And, you know, this is something that I'm interested in doing and I, I want to do it, but like. We're one month in, and I haven't even really started to try to accomplish that goal of getting educated in it yet. What am I like? Why? What am I doing? Um, so. You know, think of, you know, what, what needs to change.
Um, you know, if I can help at any point, by the way, uh, you know, you can reach out [email protected]. Uh, I, I got two ears. I like to use them. Uh, you know, so I, I just feel like sometimes you need to bounce things off of somebody else that that gets it. Uh, you know, and I can be that person if, if, if necessary.
Um, but let's, let's get the goals. And the dreams and make them a reality here in 2025 when the world is like ready to explode, like it seems like it wants to. This year. We've gotta make some really good positive magic happen and let things explode in your world in a more firework kind of manner. So please, uh, you know, go ahead, take those positive steps.
And again, if I can help out [email protected], you can ask questions, uh, whether it is in regards to, you know, how you get started or whatever. And, uh, you can ask questions that you want that, uh, to be answered here on the podcast. I'll gladly do any of that for you. So, um, feel free to reach out.
We'll have a brand new episode coming your way next week here with Voice Coaches Radio and stay safe.
