Voice Coaches Radio #459 – The 12 Days of Voice Coaches
Voice Coaches Radio. Everything voiceover.
And welcome to this week's edition of Voice Coaches Radio. I am Josh Heller. Delighted to have you joining me here as I am each and every week here on the program. It is a, uh, it's an exciting day. It's a big day. It's Christmas Day. In fact, if you are listening to this on the day it drops and I assume I assume you are.
I assume you have been waiting anxiously all day to, uh, to get this, right? I I I figured that would be the case. I mean, what else are you gonna do on Christmas Day? But, uh, but wait for the pod! Well, I wanted to do something, uh, some kind of special for the holiday because, again, it is, it is Christmas Day.
This is coming out on December 25th, Christmas Day. So, first of all, Merry Christmas to everyone. Hopefully everyone's been having a, uh, a lovely holiday thus far. Um, but, uh, but I wanted to do something, something different. So... I wasn't really sure exactly how I wanted to, uh, to treat today's pod, but I knew I wanted to do something, something special for the holiday.
So, uh, inspiration struck, uh, yesterday on Thursday when, uh, I went to the gym and, uh, the CrossFit gym that I go to, they had a workout that they have every year called the 12 Days of CrossFit. And uh, it is basically 12 miserable exercises that you do, you know, like one of something and then two of something and then that one thing again, right?
So it was like one thruster, two... power cleans in one thruster, three deadlifts, two power cleans, and then I just did kind of like, you know, the 12 days of Christmas. And what makes it even worse is that, um, aside the fact that you're, you know, sucking down air like it's going out of style, but what makes it even worse is that, uh, is that they're literally playing Christmas music the entire time and I'm not a fan.
Not a fan. Anyway. But it was, it was that. I was thinking about that. And actually, it's a, it's a fun workout. I'm not going to lie. I do enjoy it. Uh, just because it's different. But, that, that gave me a thought. Why don't we do our own version of that? The 12 days of voiceover, right? The 12 days of voice coaches or something, something like that.
So, so I, uh, I, I put my, uh, my creative hat on. And, uh, I did come up with just that. The 12 days of, uh, of, of Voice Coach's radio, right? The 12 days of, of voiceover. And, um, yeah, so we will present those, uh, those to you in, uh, in, in song form, uh, of some sort. We'll do a little singing there and feel free to sing.
Um, but, uh, these are all going to be things that are important to voice actors that we've talked about on the pod, uh, any number of times and, uh, and, you know, kind of, listen, I also had to get him to fit into the, the, the syllable, uh, pattern here, the syllabic pattern here. So, um. I did the best I could.
This could be a terrible idea. I'm not sure. This could be a terrible idea. But you know what? I'm feeling it. We're going for it. We're going for it. So, um, without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, uh, the first thing in voiceover that is so important to me is cold reading accurately. Get it? Cold reading accurately.
Right? Cold reading accurately. So important. We've talked about it. Being able to read accurately. So, so very important. That's the first one. Super important. Super important. So, that is, uh, that is your first. It is cold reading accurately. Now, the second thing in voiceover that's so important to me, vocal hygiene.
Vocal hygiene and cold reading accurately. Okay, so, uh, vocal hygiene. Obviously, super important to make sure that your voice is staying healthy, uh, especially as we get into the winter months. Right, winter just starting, the solstice just, uh, earlier this week, so it is going to continue to be cold and snowy like it is here, uh, so we want to make sure we're taking care of our vocal cords, I mean, all year long, but really with the, uh, you know, with the wintertime coming, it can be a little bit, uh, a little bit trickier, so we want to make sure that we're doing that, so, uh, so the third Thing in voiceover, that's so important to me.
This one was a tough one, I'm not gonna lie. Because if you go back to the original Twelve Days of Christmas, it's um, Three French hens, it's three syllables. That's it, it's just three syllables. That's tough. That's tough. So, this one I kinda took a little uh, A little creative liberty with. And uh, and the three is small business.
Small business. Right? Small business, vocal, hygiene, and cold reading accurately. Woo! Small business. And, and, again, you've heard us say this before, but as a voice As a voice actor, you are a small business. That's how we look at ourselves. We are our own small businesses. So we need to treat ourselves that way.
Treat and act like we're small businesses. All right, the fourth thing in voiceover that's so important to me, reading like you talk. Reading like you talk, right? We've talked about that conversational reading. How important that is, right? That's what is so important. We've talked about it, uh, you know, forever.
It's so important to, you know, to read like you talk. You can't read like, you know, that conversational reading, right? Reading without sounding like you're reading. So, reading like you talk, small business, vocal, hygiene and cold, reading accurately. Alright. The fifth, the fifth one. Okay, so this is the five golden rings one.
So we had to make this one pretty big. All right. So the fifth thing in voiceover, that's so important to me, build relationships. That's right. Build relationships. So important to build relationships. That is the core of the marketing that we do is building. Relationships, to get that repeat work, right? So we got build relationships, reading like you talk, small business, vocal hygiene, and cold reading accurately.
Okay, moving on. Uh, let's see, we are on the sixth, the sixth thing in voiceover that's so important to me. Tell people you do this. Right, we've talked about that. Tell people you do this. Don't be afraid. Don't be ashamed. Tell people you do this. Right, word of mouth. We gotta get that out there. That's one of the big things in our marketing.
Just start telling people. People you know. People you don't know. Tell people you do this. So, Tell people you do this. Build relationships. Reading like you talk. Small business. Vocal hygiene. And cold reading accurately. Okay, whoo! Uh, let's see, we got seven. Ooh, the seventh thing in VoiceOver, that's so important to me, is no caffeine or dairy.
No caffeine or dairy, right? We talked about vocal hygiene, a little, a little spin off of that, also worked, uh, with the syllables. So, uh, no caffeine or dairy. When you're getting ready to go into the booth, when you're getting ready to do a session to record, Don't have caffeine. It can dry out your voice, right?
It is a diuretic. Watch out for the dairy. It can coat that mucus, make it even a little bit thicker, right? So we want to stay away from dairy. We want to stay away from caffeine. So, no caffeine or dairy. Tell people you do this. Build relationships. Reading like you talk. Small business. Vocal hygiene and cold reading accurately.
Okay, where are we to next? Ah, the eighth. The eighth thing in voiceover that's so important to me. Sending thank you notes. Yeah, sending thank you notes. How about handwritten thank you notes as well? Right, sending thank you notes. One of the things we want to do when we reach out to people, when we, you know, have connection with people, when they listen to our material, when they consider us for a job, or we actually have a job.
Follow up with a handwritten thank you note. Right? Just a nice little touch. Nice little personal touch. So, sending thank you notes, no caffeine or dairy, tell people you do this, build relationships, reading like you talk, small business, vocal hygiene, and cold reading accurately. Alright, on to the ninth.
The ninth thing in voiceover that's so important to me. No noisy clothing. No noisy clothing. Right? When you get into that booth. Don't have noisy clothing, right? And that includes things like, uh, you know, bracelets that can jingle jangle, earrings that make noise, swishy pants or corduroy or, you know, other fabrics that are, that are going to do that, right?
We, we don't want to be able to hear our clothes. Want to see them? Don't wanna hear them. Don't wanna hear them. Okay, so, uh, No noisy clothing sending thank you notes No caffeine or dairy, tell people you do this Build relationships Reading like you talk Small business, vocal hygiene And cold reading accurately Alright, on to the 10th.
The 10th thing in voiceover that's so important to me, join your local chamber. That's right, join your local chamber, also something we've talked about. Right, we talked about those groups you can join, ad clubs, chambers of commerce, great places to meet local businesses and local business owners. Now, right now, it's a little bit tough because, you know, you can't go to those chamber meetings that are always nice to go to, but you're still going to get a book filled.
With all the different members and all their information, right? We talked about this, uh, with, uh, with, uh, David Bourgeois, right? Uh, last week or the, or the week before when we talked about marketing, right? You're going to get that book. Got all those contact information in there. Yeah, you're not going to have those, those chamber meetings, but still well, well worth it to become a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
So join your local chamber. No noisy clothing. Sending thank you notes, no caffeine or dairy, tell people you do this, build relationships. Reading like you talk, small business, vocal hygiene, and cold reading accurately. Uh, 11. We're almost done guys, I promise, we're almost done. Number 11. Getting business cards!
Why don't we talk about that? Getting business cards, having some kind of collateral, right? Something you can give people that has information for them to listen to you. Whether it's a website or a webpage address that they can go to, right? That's obviously one of the best things to do for that. Has contact information on it, so that you can pass those out, right?
You know, we want to have some kind of collateral to hand out to people, so that they know who we are. And they can... Listen to our material, okay? So, getting business cards, join your local chamber, no, no, no, noisy clothing. Ooh, sorry. Sending thank you notes, no caffeine or dairy. Tell people you do this, build relationships.
Reading like you talk, small business, vocal hygiene, and cold reading accurately. Alright, we've made it to the end. Alright, we've made it to the end. It's the twelfth and final voiceover. Information I want you to have, okay? The twelfth thing in voiceover, that's so important to me, shameless plug coming up, uh, is Voice Coaches Radio!
Oh my goodness, Voice Coaches Radio, what a great tool! What a great place to go to, you know, uh, find out... Information on topics that you might be interested in, in the world of voiceover. Hear interviews from experts, from, uh, uh, other voiceover artists. Right? Great place to go. And hey, you're already here, so you guys are way ahead of the curve.
Also, sometimes, every now and again, you get to listen to, uh, the, the podcast host make a fool of himself. Well, actually, you get to hear that pretty much every week. But, uh, sing, and, uh, make a fool of himself. In a holiday manner. So, Voice Coaches Radio, that is the twelfth, so, Okay, we're gonna do this, guys.
We're gonna do this, and feel free to sing along at home. Here we go. Ahem! The twelfth thing in voiceover that's so important to me, Voice Coaches Radio, getting business cards, Join your local chamber, no noisy clothing, Sending thank you notes, no caffeine or dairy, Tell people you do this, build relationships.
Reading like you talk small business vocal hygiene and cold reading at your right, Lee, thank you very much. Uh, so those are the 12 things in voiceover that are, uh, that are important to me. So I just thought it'd be fun. I don't know, just, uh, having a little fun here because that's what we do here on the pod.
Uh, thanks for hanging in there with me for this. Uh, painful experience. Trust me, it was just as painful for me as it was for you. Uh, but hopefully it, uh, it brought a smile to your face, and I hope everyone has a very happy, healthy holiday. Stay safe out there, everyone. All right, please, please, please stay safe.

With the holidays upon us, Josh decided to get festive and put a voice over spin on the classic Christmas carol, the 12 Days of Christmas; the 12 things in voice over that are so important to me…
