VO Behind-The-Scenes: Alvin & The Chipmunks
This week, the third Alvin & The Chipmunks movie opens, and if there are any voice overs in the world that are instantly identifiable, it’s the sound of those fuzzy little rock stars. We thought you’d enjoy a glimpse behind the scenes of the voice over recording sessions of the talented cast.
The first video features footage of the six main voice actors (Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Christina Applegate, Amy Poehler, and Anna Faris) doing their lines. It’s interesting to see how the actors not only have to read slower than normal, but also how much emphasis and emotion they still have to put into their deliveries. If it can be challenging to get emotions across using just your voice in a regular VO setting, imagine how challenging it must be when your voice is sped up to sound like a chipmunk.
Also interesting to see is how high-pitched Jesse McCartney has to get his voice in order to play Theodore. Even with the voice alteration that’s added to chipmunk-ize him, he still has to get into a high pitch to get the exact voice needed for Theodore. You can see him talk about it in the interview above, where he also discusses how he got the part, the challenges of the role, and more.
Finally, we have the trailer for the film, where you can see some of the great voice performances in all of their chipmunk glory!
