VO Behind-The-Scenes: Puss In Boots

Posted 8:26 pm by team

Spinning out of the Shrek movie franchise, Puss In Boots hit theaters a few weeks ago and quickly turned into a smash hit in its own right. Below, we have some terrific videos that give you a look behind the scenes at the voice actors bringing the characters to life.

The first video is an interview with stars Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek. Not only do they give you an interesting look into how they work together and how they brought their characters to life, but there’s one part of the video I’m really glad they included. It’s the shot of Antonio Banderas recording his voice over while holding an actual sword. How cool is that? Sometimes, a prop can really help you get into character, and it’s obviously an integral part of who Puss In Boots is. I thought that was the kind of cool behind-the-scenes thing you don’t get to see very often.

The second video is a more traditional making-of featurette, with interviews with the stars and the filmmakers. I included this one so you could see what some of the finished product with Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek’s voices looks and sounds like.

Finally, we have a very cool video that presents raw footage of the stars at the microphones, delivering their lines. Look how physical Anonio Banderas gets with his entire body to deliver his lines; you also see him with his sword again here. Salma Hayek, by contrast, is a little more reserved, physically speaking, but her character is also less over the top than Banderas’ is. Of course, it’s all a matter of what works best for each actor in the booth. And is Zach Galifianakis wearing a bathrobe?!? (Actually, I’m pretty sure it’s just a hoodie.) Even Billy Bob Thornton and movie director Guillermo Del Toro show up.

It’s also cool to see how different each line delivery is. Watching Antonio Banderas say “Holy Frijoles! They do exist!” three completely different ways in a row is a terrific example of what great voice acting is all about. Stick around to the end of the video and you can see the final takes of each line as they appear in the finished movie!
