VO Behind-The-Scenes: Thundercats

Posted 2:40 pm by team

Many of you already know that The Cartoon Network has launched a new version of the hit ’80s cartoon Thundercats, and with the help of a few friends, we’ve found some really terrific behind-the-scenes interviews to share with you.

One of Voice Coaches’ former students and her husband, Marianne Petrino-Schaad and Tom Schaad, produce (and host) a TV show called Fast Forward: Contemporary Science Fiction (and you can visit them here: http://www.fast-forward.tv/index.htm). A few months back, they had voice actor extraordinaire Matthew Mercer on their show to talk about his voice over career as a whole as well as his role on the new Thundercats show.

The incredibly talented Mr. Mercer not only appears as Tygra on the new Thundercats show, but he’s also voiced roles in the groundbreaking anime movie Akira, Street Fighter, Cowboy Bebop, and video games of Star Trek, X-Men, Final Fantasy, Warcraft and many others. His interview is broken into two parts (above and below) and runs about 18 minutes total, but he discusses voice over almost exclusively throughout the whole thing. It’s hard to find really in-depth interviews with voice actors these days, and so this is a great insight into the world of creating voice overs for animation and video games.

In the final video (below), we’ve provided the trailer for the new Thundercats show so you can see — and hear — what it looks like. Unfortunately, you don’t get to hear Mr. Mercer’s character talk, but you do get a sense of all the great voice talent involved in this show, which includes notable VO talent like Will Freidle, Corey Burton, Clancy Brown, Dee Bradley Baker, and Emmanuelle Chriqui.

Looks petty incredible, doesn’t it? Thanks again to Marianne and Tom for sharing this interview with us!!
