Voice Overs Of The World: A Royal Affect

Posted 10:01 am by team

In honor of today’s royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, we thought we’d give our blog post a British flair! (Yes, even we’re caught up in the hoopla!) So we thought we’d share two great new ad campaigns that feature British voice over actors.

The first two ads (above and below) are for Sony’s new Cybershot panoramic camera feature. The ads tell the supposedly “true” stories behind two very famous photographs of Albert Einstein and Marilyn Monroe. The voice overs feature a male voice actor with a bold British accent, and the delivery style is purposefully a bit over-dramatic. The backing music plays up the Hollywood melodrama of the spots, and the end result — while a bit silly — is pretty effective. I think a good VO is a great way to enhance a showcase for what is largely a visual medium: photography.

The next two ads (below) are for a British water product called Drench. These give us a glimpse into Drench’s fictional top-secret hydration laboratories, where the company tries to figure out creative ways to keep people hydrated. Now, I haven’t been able to confirm this yet, but I would bet dollars to donuts that that’s Karl Pilkington doing the voice overs. Pilkington rose to quasi-fame as the producer of Ricky Gervais’s incredibly popular podcast, as Gervais would basically get Pilkington talking about various things to extremely comedic effect. Pilkington’s become a bit of a celebrity in his own right, even now hosting his own comedy/travel reality show called An Idiot Abroad.

Whoever’s voice it is, it’s a great fit for these commercials, with a sort of monotonous tone that gives the humor a really dry feel. I love the part towards the end of the second commercial where he says, “Oh, baby. Plucky, plucky family, our lot.” It’s just such a great delivery, as if he’s talking about a dog show, rather than a family that just got completely drenched by a passing plane. I think these ads are a lot of fun, largely due to the great use of VO.
