VO Behind-The-Scenes: Rio
Today sees the release of Fox’s latest animated movie, Rio. The film features an all-star cast that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, George Lopez, Jamie Foxx, Will.I.Am, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Mann, and many others. We’ve found a really great making-of video that I think will be of great interest to voice over fans and actors alike!
In the video above, we see essentially the entire cast voicing portions of their roles. What’s great about this is that you really get a sense of the creative process at work (as well as a look at what the voices look like when matched to the animation)! You can watch as each cast member goes through a few segments of their script and really get a sense of how many takes they do, as well as how many different ways they deliver each line.
It’s a really great creative primer, because you can see that even big name stars like Anne Hathaway try each line in a variety of different ways to get just the right delivery. It’s also fascinating to watch how much physicality each actor puts into their role. Watch Jesse Eisenberg move his arms like a bird’s wings or Leslie Mann pointedly wagging her finger when she’s scolding Blue. These are things that make a performance better; even though the audience can’t see what the voice actor is doing, using your body to improve your performance is a long-time technique used by professional voice actors who strive to get the most out of their voice.
Finally, the second video is the film’s trailer, just so you can see all the wonderful voice talent in the finished product. I think this movie looks like a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to see it, especially now that I’ve seen how much work has gone into crafting the VO performances.
