Voice Overs of the World: The Legend of The McRib
I hate to sound like a commercial, but the McRib is back!
For those of you who don’t know, the McRib is a sandwich from McDonald’s that has gained something of a cult classic status. It’s only available for a limited time each year, and even then usually only in select areas of the country. Apparently there is a legion of devoted fans who wait anxiously for this sandwich every year — much like Linus waiting in the pumpkin patch for The Great Pumpkin — and when it comes around again, it’s a major event for them.
Well, McDonald’s, in a saavy marketing move, has released an animated commercial that celebrates this year’s nationwide return — and the legend — of the McRib, and it features some pretty great voice over work to boot.
Now, I’m not sure who does the voice over for the spot (although he sounds an awful lot like Pete Stacker of the Bud Light “Real Men of Genius” campaign), but he does a great job with it. While the deep, male voice could have been a straightforward announcer-type delivery, the talent imbues the piece with the necessary combination of gravitas, inspiration, awe, and humor to really make this piece work. I love the way he switches from a breathy, hushed voice to a loud, booming voice when the script calls for it. He really works his volume range, and when you combine his delivery with the expertly-chosen music behind it, it’s hard not feel a tiny bit inspired… even if it is just a sandwich we’re talking about here.
Are you a McRib fanatic? And if not, does this video make you want to try one?
