Hey - thanks for making these great points... So much VO and VO narration is just like this... I think this was terrific work, and I'm sure it could have been done well with other creative VO interpretations - but it also depends of course on the choices of the producers and clients... Really nice example tho.

It has taken me ages to figure out who this voice actor is. I too initially thought of Karl Pilkington. It was only when I clicked on your page that I realised. His name is Ewen MacIntosh. He played Keith in The Office as well as a few parts in Little Britain.

Hi, Nice idea to feature British voice overs.
I am a British VO actor based in Los Angeles.
I just did a PSA for the charity gift fund that
the Royal couple have asked people to donate to
in lieu of wedding gifts.
You can find it at:
www.facebook.com/british.voiceovers.la

If you land on the comment page go to welcome
and then click on audio and there will be a
photo of William and Kate - then just hit play.

Lots of folks ask what voices should I perfect if I want to get into the "Video Game Industry". People tell me they have a great "Kermit the Frog" voice or "John Wayne".

Well Producers are looking for new voices, new ideas, new approaches so....work on your own new creative voices.

Here's a little trick...

When you come up with a new voice, a new idea or delivery, record it somehow so you don't forget it. Grab the cassette recorder, call yourself on your cell phone and leave yourself a message in the new voice...anything to keep from forgetting.

Next have a notebook to list all these new voices. Go ahead and give them a name so you can practice them till you have them locked in. Maybe your newest creation is a Squeaky Bug...

Then be ready to demonstrate them on request. When a producer asks for a voice to go along with their latest creation, then you will have a ready made list of new stuff to share.

Remember....LUCK is when Preparation and Opportunity collide. Always be prepared and maybe you will get LUCKY!

Mike, Great comprehensive review of the SB commercials! I have to agree that the cars took the cake. The Camaro spot was a great example of conversational reads and hits the youth demographic perfectly: creative fantasy about cars and err, teachers. The other Chevy is classic Tim Allen who has excelled in off camera work as much as he did on camera. In addition to his great work with Chevy and Campbell’s his Michigan tourism spots are perfect. -Kevin
PS- More of my super voice-over thoughts:

The best thing about these voice overs is, like you said, their casual approach. They use a smooth tone of voice to talk about why they love their iphones and why it makes their life easier, they're not telling you "buy it, buy it!", they are only sharing their experiences.

Great post -- my favorite car commercial features Kate Walsh (Cadillac?) She practically growls the copy, and it's so sexy. I love Jeff Bridges in this ad, but I wish the producers would have corrected his pronunciation of "Callaghan"!

You are right that these three vo are different. I loved the chickens! The lamborghini add was awesome. That voice is so somber with those exciting graphics. Such a contrast. The ad is a work of art like the car.
The baseball one is like a comfort zone nostaligic tone.

I agree with what you say about the first commercial, all the elements you mention plus the VO gives it a sense of emotion, a nostalgic approach for baseball fans who must be delighted with the start of the season. About the second video, lol with the Chickens' voices.

The first commercial is great, the voice over in it plays a big part as his voice helps to keep interest after every shock and makes you wait for more, and although he doesn't use a funny voice, he applies humor to every part.

The best thing about these voice overs is, like you said, their casual approach. They use a smooth tone of voice to talk about why they love their iphones and why it makes their life easier, they're not telling you "buy it, buy it!", they are only sharing their experiences.

Hi.

I like your choice of spots but I think you would be remiss if you didn't include one of Canada's most famous voice over talents as part of your collection of Olympic spots:

Great VOs on the Chrysler commercial and the E-Trade one with the babies, the Cars.com commercial is great and uses a clever insight, but should have a better ending to wrap it up.

Mike - Thanks for this excellent review of the SB ads from the VO side of things! I agree E-trade is more of a good thing and the Dodge ad was a creative and VO masterpiece. However, my favorites of the night came from Coke - ironically two of the least VO laden spots! See my blog post (http://wp.me/py5Xj-iT) for details. -Kevin

The Dr. Pepper commercial has a really clever concept and it supports it with the humor provided by the characters like the Easter Bunny. It has become quite a tendency to give animated characters normal day-to-day voices, it actually makes them funnier.

Voice overs in Wii Active have a more common type of voice and accent, this helps to avoid users from using the mute button on their tv, theres also better music that comes with an improved sound quality.

This cast of voice actors has done an excellent job, the cartoon series wouldn't have the same succes without them.

The Simpsons have been around since Dec 17,1989!!, they have appeared on things from US postage stamps, to even a playboy cover.Watchout for the documentary "The Simpsons 20th anniversary Special in 3D", released early this year.

Average every day voices work best for characters, like these "Pop Corns", when the idea is to give them an every-day human attitude. In the Second commercial the every day voice is given to the nerdy roommate because he is the center of attention.

Hi Mike,

I happen to be a fan of understated British comedy and thought this was quite reminiscent of some other films made with the same quirks and general wry humour.

The ironic twist of a somewhat civilized alien eating Raisin Bran is absolutely classic. Goes contrary to the brand image and makes it more accessible to people in other demographics.

Cheers,

Stephanie

Hi Mike,

I recently viewed Disney's movie "Earth" narrated by James Earl Jones and Roy Disney was shown briefly beforehand in a tribute to Walt Disney's dedication to capturing and sharing the natural world on film. Roy was so proud of what Disney had achieved and also where it is going.

You've hit it - the end of an era.

Best wishes,

Stephanie

Hi Mike,

A wonderful look back at one of the most beloved Christmas programs on the air! Great voices do endure. I'm not surprised that those classics, despite newer more advanced styles of animation, continue to hold a prime time spot on broadcast television and in our hearts.

Happy New Year to you :)

You are totally right, the Alien's voice is what makes it so funny and gives him a human connection, with the accent and all. Its a shock at first to see an Alien at the table talking like a regular guy, but that's what advertising is all about.

Batman: The Animated Series was one of my favorite shows growing up. Of course, one of the best parts was waiting until the end to look at the voice acting credits! Some great names were on that show: Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Roddy MacDowall, Adrienne Barbeau and even songwriter Paul Williams. It's great to hear about Mark's inspiration for his trademark laugh!

And a good one at that, Ray! Mr. Hamill has done so many different kinds of acting and creative projects: on-camera, voice acting, writing, producing, movies, TV, video games, animation. It goes to show that you can branch out from the things you're best known for and really develop yourself creatively when you put your mind to it. Thanks for reading and commenting!

An excellent point, Federico! The casting director or producer who chose the three voices for this commercial did a terrific job. They obviously had a clear picture in their head of what they were looking for!

Its great VO work, the puppets are not even doing so much animation, but through their voice they are transmitting a lot. Its a perfect example of how much a good voice can do on an animated character, although you must give credit to the character's creator who chooses the VO for the work.

Hi, thanks so much for sharing the advice, inspirational points and Thanksgiving humour which I indeed gobbled-up (Ha!). Thanksgiving is a very symbolic holiday in many ways; anything from being thankful for where you are and from where you have come....and for maintaining and reinforcing the dream of where you want to journey to. Additionally, yes....thank you notes and correspondences are meaningful and go a long way in business as well as interpersonally. As always Voicecoaches...great advice and information; thanks so much and a joyous and safe holiday to you all! - Daniel -

Voice actors should be able to identify the kind of voice that they interpret the best and stick to it, some are able to do many types of voices, but knowing which type is your best is hugely important because that's the one you need to promote and market for jobs.

Mike, maybe try thinking of opera as "voice over the orchestra!" On a night when everything lines up, one can be moved to tears or gales of laughter. If you have the opportunity, choose a comedy like The Barber of Seville. (Last fall you could have attended for free in Washington DC at the Nationals Ball park. Opera, brats and beer...how does that sound?)
If you want more ideas, let me know, because when I am not behind the mic,I am singing opera! Thanks for the irresistible post.

My parents insisted on buying season tickets to the Lyric opera in Chicago. As a middle school student, I can tell you, it was not my choice to go. But every month we would drive from St Joseph Mich. to Chicago; attend the opera that evening and drive back home that night. I did not understand much of it since it was usually in a foreign language, but I became familiar with the libretto, and learned to appreciate the vocal techniques(no mics or sound systems there!)and became intrigued with the sets and costumes and pagentry of it all. I saw some famous people and grew to love the voice as an instrument. Its why I became a singer, a vocal instructor, and now a voice actor. Nothing shows vocal talent and technique like a skilled opera singer! The purity of the venue is like nothing else! Try it! You will learn to appreciate it! Mozz

You can use the internet as a way to combat these "famine" periods of no jobs. Promote your abilities as a voice talent through the internet. Its definitely an alternative you must try, to avoid "twiddling thumbs for days".

Cheers!

Gary Cole is phenominal at creating his characters using his voice. As you mentioned, going through his resume of work he's done is extensive, but thinking about the characters, they're all so unique and dynamic. You can just look at him and think "Yeah... I'm gonna need you to come in on Saturday..." I couldn't imagine that it would be a hard transition for him to relay his characters through a microphone.

Thanks for the tribute to a childhood favorite of mine. I watched NYC television from our home in Connecticut when I was a child, and Soupy is one of my earliest memories at laughing at the TV. I didn't always understand what all the adult crew members behind the cameras were laughing at sometimes, but Soupy's simple sense of silliness transcended age. I hope St. Peter greeted him with a cream pie!

Well, there you have it. Voice acting advice from Bill Lumbergh himself, (or Gary Cole as many of you would refer to him as.) After seeing a lot of big name actors do voice over work for animated films with many of them doing fantastic jobs, there are still many tv/film actors, even seasoned ones, who have a hard time transitioning behind the microphone and sounding natural. Its a whole different world and its yours to rule, so get out there and flex your golden pipes and let your voice be heard.

One of the best parts of watching an animated film or television show is hearing that familiar voice that makes you say..."I know that actor/actress..." I just saw "9" recently and was blown away by how perfect each actor/actress was for his/her role. It's definitely a very different experience from being onscreen, as you must paint a picture for yourself as you're in the booth. Gary is one of those guys whose voice may pop up where you least expect it, but you know it when you hear it!

As a diehard Beatles fan, I will indeed agree that there is no band out there that will ever match their success or legacy. You hit the nail right on the head, Mike; it is extremely important to set goals for yourself as a voice actor. If you are trying to hard to be the next "Don LaFontaine" then you may end up frustrating yourself as he was the only man with his particular voice. It is about carving out your own "legacy" and being the best "you" you can possibly be!

I'll tell you what, the minute I marry my future millionaire wife I'm going to get out and fly across the world. Since that will probably never happen in this lifetime, I am going to stick with the formula I've used my entire life that has given me all my success in this business. Now, that formula is simple, persistence, a confident attitude, skill development, and a extremely positive state-of- mind. To me, those are the essentials and should be utilized no matter what you are up against. But lets face it, the positive attitude should be a given because remember, voice acting is fun!

Very true indeed, Mike. You may end up sending out as many as 50 demo CDs, but if you do not follow up with these contacts and keep trying to make new contacts, your success in this field will be limited. The other part that sometimes gets lost in the work portion of voice acting is that this is supposed to be FUN! The harder you try to put yourself out there, the more likely you are to have fun using your voice on a variety of different projects. So keep the spirit of Amelia alive!

Looking forward to listening to the podcasts. I was trained by Voice Coaches two years ago and have been doing local voice-over jobs ever since. I'm in the process of building a home recording studio, and I'll be checking in frequently for advice. The training I received from you guys has been invaluable. Keep up the great work!

Being involved with the first of the new and improved Voice Coaches Radio podcasts was a great experience. A lot of what we will be covering will be questions that I hear from the voice actors that I work with, prior to the session. These questions often come up during the sessions as well (i.e. slowing down, one of my favorites!) Plus for those of us hear who LOVE to hear ourselves talk, it's great!!

This first podcast was a real kick to do.(They're going to edit out our bloopers, right?). I tried to relate some of my billing experiences, good and bad, as well. And I'm really excited about the topics we're considering for the future. They're all based on questions we get from professional voice actors. Ask us anything about the business and we'll do our darnedest to give you some feedback you can use!

Great words, Mike. I remember well the events of 40 years ago (don't tell anyone) and truly believe that somewhere inside I was thinking, "Heck, if they can fly to the moon, I can work on the radio!" I was only a teenager, but that's where my voice acting career began. Through the years I've encouraged my kids and all the people I've had the pleasure to introduce to the power of the voice that you never know unless you try. What's the worse that can happen? You try again!

Of course, being a huge Family Guy fan my money is on Seth MacFarlane, but I also would like to see Hank Azeria win. Any one who can make me laugh as much as they do deserves it. Congratulations to The Simpsons and all of their cast members for continuously being nominated for all these years!

Well, I'm a pretty big fan of both The Simpsons and Robot Chicken, but I also respect Ron Rifkin as an actor. If I had to pick just one, though, I think I'd like to see Seth Green win for Robot Chicken, just because it's such a funny, offbeat, edgy show!

I remember Fred from when I was younger and he guest starred on numerous sitcoms and game shows, but I've also seen him on countless talk shows and he was always, always funny. His impressions were amazing, and as a child of the '80s, The Shirt Tales (for which he voiced Bogey the Orangutan) is an indelible part of my childhood!

We'll miss you, Fred!

It's always sad when a voice is stilled, and an iconic voice such as that of Mickey Mouse makes it sadder still. We can all take solace in the thought that Wayne's work made us smile, a lot, and will live on due to the magic of the medium. "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

Wow...I've always loved Mickey (and his sweet voice), and never really thought about the man behind the Mouse.
Wayne Allwine definitely took an iconic character beloved by many and made him his own.
I am truly sad to hear of this great voice-over artist's passing....
but take comfort in the fact that his talent and work will live on for many to enjoy in years to come.

One of the most famous animated characters with a most distinctive voice.

My daughter also loves the Clubhouse show.

Sad news. Thanks for letting me know.

Wayne was a real talent. I watch him every morning on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with my two-year-old twins. They love the show, and they both love Mickey Mouse because of Mr. Allwine's contributions. His passing is a real loss to the the VO industry, Disney, and children's television the world over.

Thanks for the memories, Mr. Allwine!

Doing Voice Over work is something I've always wanted to do- even before I knew what it was called- when I was a kid. My thanks to John Gallogly for the seminar he held last Fall at Montgomery County Community College- you were realistic and gave me direction. Now I'm sending out my demos and remain juiced up!
About "thinking about it" - the day to decide is the day you hear the question. If you want to think about it- you've already decided... to do nothing. And that's exactly what will happen -nothing, and exactly how much success you'll have- none. This may sound harsh, but I take it that this is a business for adults- you need to know that if you don't succeed, you fail, and if you haven't decided to be successful, you've decided to fail.

I have only been pursuing voice acting since about the first of the year, but I am completely juiced! I've been through the Voice Coaches training, made my demo and am sending it out, and am in the process of setting up my home studio (buying equipment). I can think of nothing cooler than to be able to do voice over work full time. It is something I've wanted to do since I was a little kid- there was a top 40 song when I was a kid called "I wanna be a base man" about an acapella base singer- I used to practice that day and nite. Now in my 50's it is actually in site! I've been reading the reports and transcripts from the Expo and they are awesome- hopefully I'll be able to go next time. I can't wait to call up and say I've got a paying gig! I've been told all my life I've got a great voice but I never knew how or what to do about it. Thanks to a one nite college seminar by John Gollogly I got the knowledge-Thanks Voice Coaches!

I must say, it is amusing that CNN got this close. I still think that they put voice acting too far down the list. But, then again, if they've never tried it themselves, they wouldn't know just how much fun it could be.

Being an ex-radio jock, I do a small amount of voice work on the side and absolutely love it! You know what they say, if you can do something you love and make money at it you're a very lucky person.

And here I thought I had the greatest job in the world! What could be better than working with voice actors all day long?

As an English/Journalism major in college, I always view mainstream media with a critical eye, but once in a while they do actually approach things from a realistic point of view, and I'm glad that CNN recognizes what a fun and exciting profession voice acting is. With the amount of voice overs a network like that uses, I'm sure they have a real perspective on how important voice acting is to the world of media and entertainment. It's nice to see they're not keeping it a secret! Well done, CNN!

Good morning David,

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you, your staff and all the presenters for the outstanding job everyone did at the 2009 Marketing Expo on Saturday 05/02/09.
I will tell you that my expectations for the event were set quite high prior to going to the event due to the professionalism that you and your staff have demonstrated to me over the past few weeks during my Premier Training Program. Not only did you meet my expectations, You exceeded them by leaps and bounds.
Personally my timing could not have been better to attend this event as I am in the middle of my training program and the plethora of information provided at the event was further substantiation that I chose the right company for my voice over training.
All of the presenters did such an outstanding job in delivering their respective messages in a precise, detailed, motivational, fun, and entertaining way.
I also have to say that I was very impressed on how you managed the schedule throughout the day by precisely following the agenda, which from first hand experience is no easy task with over 165 people in attendance.
The Mixer event was also a great opportunity to speak with many fellow voice actors that are in various stages of their training or careers and the information I gathered from them was invaluable, which will help me to develop an effective business plan to insure my success as a voice actor.
Please extend my sincere thanks to everyone that made this event a Huge Success.

I was already extremely motivated and passionate about your Premier Training program and if it's possible, I have become even more excited about my career path and can't wait to complete my demo on May 27th in Schenectady. I look forward to making the trip to Schnectady in a few weeks to meet with the staff of voice coaches and complete my demo.

Thanks again for all the many hours of hard work everyone put in to make the event such a huge success.
Keep up the great work.

Best regards,
Doug Warner

I've been to a lot of conventions and conferences in my time, and I can easily say that this year's expo was by far the most exciting, energetic, and FUN event I've been to. I was amazed by the enthusiasm of our students, while all of the presenters offered dynamic and informative presentations, and there was an energy in the air that was simply palpable. Believe it or not, despite all the hours of hard work that went into preparing for the expo, I'm already looking forward to next year's event!

If you missed it, be sure to check out some of the video clips that are up in the Voice Coaches TV section. You can access Voice Coaches TV by clicking on the logo on the VC main page. Enjoy!

Oh yes, Mike is correct! We are excited. I must have been too exhausted to covey that.

I just returned from a technical meeting with the engineers from the GE Theater and I've been assured everything is a GO! The technical side is a bit complicated as in addition to providing microphones for the speakers and the multi-person expert panels, we also have to mic the speakers and room for our own recording of the event... this includes room mics for the audience.

On top of that, we are making full use of the gigantic surround screen that the theater offers, running images, video, and text between and behind our guest speakers.

While that's happening, the entire presentation is being filmed from HiDef cameras for future reference.

We will also run candid videos and photos on the big screen in the info-vend area just outside the theater.

Caterers want to be on location at 6:30 am, as will our tech crew and team.

On top of this, people are still trying to register!!!

Wow!

This is going to rock!

Sleep, David? What is this "sleep" of which you speak?

David filled you in on the hard work going in to the expo and the incredible collection of speakers we have coming, but I don't think he got across just how excited everyone at Voice Coaches is about the event. We work with so many people day in and day out throughout the year, but many of them we never get to meet face to face. This is our chance to get out there and meet some of the people who we've trained, corresponded with, and networked with throughout our everyday business lives. I can tell you this: you won't see a single Voice Coaches team member at the expo that won't be smiling from ear to ear! Can't wait to see YOU there!

Seth McFarlane's a great example of success that's a result of pure drive and determination. I'm sure in his wildest dreams he never thought he'd become a household name, but he knew he had a dream that he had to pursue, and look where he is today! It just goes to show that if you have a dream or a passion, you should pursue it and give it everything you have. You never know if you might be the next household name!

I've spoken to quite a few real pros lately. I just exchanged emails with a voice actor who's credits include, Warner Bros., NBC, CBS, and the list goes on. He has an incredible voice. However, he doesn't attribute his success to his voice. He told me a lot of people have great voices, but most of them never follow through. From a-z they stop somewhere in between, if ever getting started. He said he always follows through. Even with the success he has he told me he still sends everyone at the vo jobs he's done thank you cards.

Follow through, and believe in yourself.

I'm still working on all three, but I'm feeling good about my chances!

DAVID,

This article descibed me to a tee. However, I recently got out of the passengers seat and just completed my demo
session with Warren! Robin was my on-line instructor and what a wonderful time we had working together.

I know with the training and suggestions I received from these two I can, If I stay in the driver's seat, go as far as I want to
in this new and exciting endevor.

Also just a quick note to say thanks for the way ya'll treated my wife and I on our recent visit.

Kristen has got to be a great asset to your frim!

Ah, sad was the day when I heard Chris was leaving.
My mouth dropped to the floor and I question what my ears were receiving.
What, Chris departing, it came as such a surprise,
One could see the shock and sadness in my eyes.
So, Chris my studio pal, wherever your new path takes you,
I hope they learn to appreciate you the way all that we all do.
You'll be missed, there's no doubt about that,
But if youre like me, within time, youll be back!

I only had the privilege of working with Chris for a few short weeks, but the experience was an absolute pleasure. His professionalism and great sense of humor will surely be missed. Good luck with the new gig!

Even though I will miss Chris for his willingness to help with any technical difficulty, and always with a smile... I will miss him more for his cookie gusto. This is a man who is not afraid of ripping off the plastic at 8:30am to enjoy the benefits of breakfast cookie goodness.

By baking skills will miss you!

Hey Voice Coaches

Very sorry to hear Chris has left the family, but also happy about is new gig. He recorded the heck out of my demo and was not shy about it. I often get a kick out of Chris and his willingness to help me jump my car that day, even though he was sort of freaked out by the thunderstorm and my dogs bad disposition. This guy was soaked by the time we were done, but he had a new friend in my dog Rudy.
Krissy in your front office tells me that he even went off and got a pooch of his own. I'll look for Chris in my travels and hope he does well.

Congratulations on your new position Chris. It was great working with you during our time together at Voice Coaches. I was always impressed with your technical knowledge and willingness to help others. Your friendliness and down to earth nature will be missed. I am sure you will go far.

Oh, and let me know if you come up with any more Sopranos trivia!

How wonderful for Chris! He worked hard to improve himself, even as he provided excellent work for the staff and students at Voice Coaches. And, now, that work has paid off.

I'll miss his humor and knowledge, and his willingness to step up for assignments and opportunities.

Best wishes, Chris.

I'm not sure what I can add to the comments David has already offered, but I can say for sure that Chris will be missed at Voice Coaches. Chris brought an energy and enthusiasm to his job that is hard to find in any industry, and his sense of humor is not one that can be easily replaced.

That being said, I'm still constantly amazed by the wealth of talent on the Voice Coaches team. As this is a new year, we have a lot of exciting new changes in store for the future!

Best of luck to you, Chris, in all your future endeavors, and I'm glad you'll still be around part-time to keep us on our toes!

Hey Alicia

Thanks for the kind words!!

I am certainly proud to have a professional team but perhaps a greater asset is that we genuinely enjoy the field.

Delighted to answer any questions and we wil look forward to working with you in the future.

Best Regards!

Great Evelyn!

These days most people we meet are actually going into our field because of the economy. I think we are coming to a time when people realize that the ability to rely on an employer for long-term income lacks certainty. When I grew up, my parents always laid out the traditional path... do well in school, get into college, get a good job, work hard, and retire.
Today however, regardless of how well you do your job or how hard you work, everything can change very quickly. In a former life I was employed by Airborne Express, a company that was on the fortune 500 list. The company was later purchased by DHL and many of my former co-workers went on to grow with that company, working very hard.
Well, last week DHL decided to "restructure" operations in the US, laying off thousands. No matter how hard these folks worked, they were at the mercy of the success and decision making power of others. All of my old friends just lost there jobs.
Where am I going with this? There has never and may never again be a better time to use any resource that you have to create a self reliant income. Whether it's voice over, or any other entrepreneurial field, try to find a way to make it happen.

Take control of the economy by creating your own!

Thanks for commenting!

Thank you David for you positive message. As a recently graduated student of Voice Coaches, the thing I have appreciated the most from my training is that you and your organization tell it like it is. I was never painted a rosy picture of landing all kinds of work after
My training was complete but at the same time the idea of never giving up was also communicated very clearly. I believe there will always be ups and downs in the economy that will affect any business, but I also believe that with faith in yourself, hard work and lots
of persistence you can be successful. Since I graduated from Voice Coaches in May, I've already landed several jobs. I thank you for the positive outlook in your blog and for this philosophy and training I learned through Voice Coaches.

In relation to the last comment, I am still doing the whole 'kids' thing which I totally love and believe in. However, I am now getting into the totally wonderful fun world of the "voice acting thingy" too. Thank you America and thank you Voicecoaches. I'm totally new, haven't even done my first job yet but I will. A close friend of mine recently told me ... Sally, I have spoken to a lot of my women friends who are trying to get back into work after children and of all the things people are doing, what you are doing has to be
the 'coolest'! Ta daaaaaaa!

This friend is a high flier. She has presence and I trust her
opinion. The icing on the cake is that my kids think this whole "acting" thing is totally 'cool' too and that is certainly good enough for me. If my kids think I am cool, then what else matters?

The point is we have to BELIEVE in ourselves.

David,
Thanks for the inspiring words.
Everyone at Voice Coaches has been consistently positive
and encouraging.
My other business - real estate - has been
in the midst of depression all year.
Working on my new voice-over business is keeping me sane
and smiling.
You guys are the best!

I'm submitting a write-in ballot for ME!

Ironically, I never wanted to start my own business, but I want to do voice-overs. The training from voice coaches got me in the right mind-set and blogs such as this keep me motivated.

Today, even before I received my demo, I sank my first (paying) job for a new company on the web.

Thanks David, Robin, Mike, John, and Kirsten.

Hey Kevin

Thanks for the kind words! It was a pleasure to work with you on the training piece we did. I have to tell you that I am seeing more and more voice actors find opportunities in web based work. From product descriptions, information and education, there is a lot of opportunity there. Podcasting is also broadening. Keep up your great work and I'm sure the work will continue to LOOK FOR YOU!

Thanks again Kevin!

David,
Excellent and inspiring thoughts! Your words of wisdom regarding a can do attitude and never-ending persistence have continued to inspire me through out the economic downturns in my VO career. Im riding a wave now with three regional spots running and an e-learning program rolling (the one you directed), but when things are quiet I go back to my VoiceCoaches training and Expo notes to get me through. THANKS - keep on inspiring youve got my vote!

Elect to succeed! I am running my own success campaign, and it isn't just for '09!

No matter what you choose to do ... Voice Acting, Carpentry, Ballroom Dancing or making Jam! JUST DO IT! Funny thing is, no one tells you if you are interested in becoming a carpenter that "Eeehhh, maybe that isn't such a good idea." But anything in the arts ... suddenly the support team around you doubts your success. Don't doubt yourself, if you love it ... DO IT!

I remember a conversation I had with a local (and successful) actress, which said she constantly received comments from her friends like: "Are you still doing that 'Acting-thing?'" This comment upset her, since the tone, and devaluing made it seem as if it was a trite little whim or phase she was going through. And that she wanted to comment back: "Are you still doing that 'married and kids thing' ???" to make them aware that their comments were not supportive.

Moral: Elect your own success; don't let the "media" dictate your reality.

Hey Stephanie

Thanks so much for making time to comment!! It's gotta be tough to find time when your busy running the most client friendly service of it's kind! As you know, our clients LOVE voices.com!
I will say, in regards to the post, that there seems to be a divide in personality type. There are those who feel tremendously impacted by what others, like news agencies, tell them is going on in the world... and then there are those that both you and I are fortunate to work with... individuals who drive and create their own destiny!
I am not in any way saying that the economy hasn't effected people... it's effected members of my own family! What I am saying is that it's sure rewarding to stare the economy in the face and take active steps to rewrite one's own situation.
I have never experienced more people moving into our field as a way of doing this. And regardless of whether it's voice over or anything else... I say go out and do it!
I will get you a podcast next week.
Give David our best!

Hi David et al,

This is a great post. Thank you for presenting this timely topic here on your blog. As you may know, we also have an election here in Canada on October 14, 2008. I wonder what your article would sound like as an episode for Voice Over Experts... if you'd like to expand on this topic and record it, I will air it before the US election as the information is very encouraging particularly, given the current economic happenings.

Sound good?

Best wishes,

Stephanie

Great thought! As Americans we need to exercise our right to vote--so get up and do it!

I had always wanted to be a voice actor. So... I have been doing it my entire adult life because I love it and I can make some extra dollars too. We are blessed to be able to act on our dreams. We can make them happen. It just requires that we, ourselves, and no one else, take the action needed to do it. American or not, you can make it happen...or have a really good time trying.

I believe I also remember a "Bg League" Voice Over Agent at our first Advanced Marketing Expo (okay, so it was Billy Serow from Abrams,) said that he has often called VO talent for work, purely because of their demo cover design. You just can't do that with an MP3! Send the physical CD.

Also ... if you do use one of those 500 put of date CD's as a drink coaster, please remember that there is a hole in the center for the condensation to get through and ruin the hardwood. For best results, back with felt or cork.

I often hear peoples frustration about not getting work, when the truth is, they have not begun looking! My suggestion is always, keep your ears open, and TELL EVERYONE! Contact the people you already know in the professional field, who may need to re-vamp their voice-mail system. If you are an Alum at XYZ University, contact your former favorite professor ... do they know who you should contact to offer your talents to for an updated Web tour of the campus?

There are so many options of where to begin, some that won't include a paycheck the first time ... but that build connections and contacts for the next paying job. Keep your ears open, and talk, talk, talk about it! (That is why you started this endeavor, right? To talk!)

Hey Voice Coaches

I have to admit... I was the kind of person you were talking about. I had wanted to do VO for a long time and figured i didn't need any training. I went straight away into a studio and made a demo. Of course then i had ABSOLUTELY no idea what to do when it came to getting work. I have done nothing with the field basically because i don't know where to begin. Just started some web site cruising and really enjoy your site.
Had to put my two cents in and agree with what you were saying, plus i was a pretty big Dynasty fan!!

Hello All!
I just wanted to say that it is clear that the people at this company are exceptionally professional. I hope to go into voice-overs in the VERY near future, and everything i see and read about all of you is well beyond anything i see elsewhere.
I really hope to have a chance to get to work with you and to meet some of these people...(or to become one of them!).
I'll contact you soon!

Thanks, David! I had an amazing time at the Expo beginning with the 'meet and greet' right thru to the end. The expo topics were well prepared and very informative. It was also nice to be able to meet some of the staff at Creative Voice I haven't had the opportunity to meet before - Warren, Jenny, Kristin, Chris, John, Ron and Melissa - to name a few. Creative Voice has certainly assembled a great team! Thank you to Chris also for the demo of recording equipment - pretty impressive how you did that from behind the screen seeing everything upside-down. I look forward to next year and more importantly to putting into play everything I learned THIS year!
Thanks again.

David and Anna,

Thank you so much for having us down to speak and for treating us to dinner. You guys have it going on! Congratulations on another successful conference. We're proud to be part of what you are doing and look forward to the next time we get to see each other.

I also want to note that the entire Voice Coaches team is fabulous. We felt right at home and part of the family. Can't wait to do it again :)

Best wishes,

Stephanie and David

Hi David, et al.

I wanted to concur that the entire expo was a great event, especially the expert panel. Thank you so much for giving al of us the chance not only to learn a great deal, but to network with so many influential people in the VO business, as well as some of our fellow peers who may not have much experience. I was quite shocked at myself, when I found myself giving advice to a few other Voice Coaches students, and I've only just gotten my demo!

Thank you, David, and everyone with the Voice Coaches team, for such a fantastic event! I already look forward to the next one.

David Winn

P.S. Had I known that you were heading out to dinner with everyone, I would have tried to elbow my way into the group!

Hi, David.

Yesterday at the Voice Coaches marketing seminar (a terrific event, by the way!), a question asked of the expert panes was whether it was good to add volunteer voiceover recordings to a demo. The response was an enthusiastic yes!

I do a lot of volunteer book reading and recording for an area public radio station's reading service for the blind and print-disabled. As a follow-up to the question asked yesterday, if I were to add samples of my recorded readings to my demo, would I need to be concerned about copyright infringement?

Thanks for your time!

Thanks for your comments Mike!
Whether it's using your voice, or helping clean up a playground, volunteering should be on everyone's list.
You are absolutely correct in your perception of the advantages of skill building for Voice Actors through volunteering. It's almost like getting free training!
Thanks again for your thoughts and we look forward to seeing you at our event this weekend!

Best Regards!

David,
I recently began volunteering for a local PBS station that has a program that reads local newspapers and magazines over the radio to individuals who are visually or otherwise impaired and who are unable to read themselves. I did this after I had gone through your training program, created a demo, and begun working professionally. There are wonderful volunteers in this program who have not had voice training, and who have no desire to be voice actors. As a professional voice actor myself, however, I view this as a great opportunity to hone my skills while at the same time volunteering to help individuals in need. I agree with you completely that volunteering should not be the place you "learn" the craft of voice-acting. If you want to be a professional voice actor, get professional training. Once you've done that, volunteering can be a great way to hone your skills and feel great about helping a good cause.

Greg

Sorry you wont be with us at the event. I am confident we will have a lot of fun based on our planned guests and attendees. BTW, we are holding the event in Schenectady NY, close to our main studios. I am also sure that Voice '08 will be tremendous. James and Penny approached me about speaking at the event, but unfortunately I have a conflict. Thanks for your comments!

I wish I had the time to make it to the Big Apple this May. I'm sure the conferene will be a hit. I got to hear Rod Saulsberry at VOICE 2007 in Los Vegas last year. He was great and I'm sure you will enjoy his presentation. VOICE 2008 is in Los Angales this year in August if anyone is interested. It is an amazing VO conference too. 4 days and over 20 coaches to choose from. Well have fun at the Expo in MAy. Wish I could join you. Hopefully next year!

Hi David,

Thank you for bringing this topic up. You've hit the nail on the head. I agree, casting should be left to casting directors and people should not have to pay for someone to find them work.

What talent should realize right away is that there is a big difference between self-promotion as a business marketing strategy and having other people represent you in order to get work.

Never give money to someone who promises the moon. Agents should only make a commission on the work that they secure for you.

However, don't be afraid to invest in the development or promotion of your business!

Marketing your business through advertising and promotional efforts is perfectly fine and encouraged. Drumming up business on your own is sometimes the best way to go.

Thanks David and Voice Coaches.

Best wishes,

Stephanie Ciccarelli

This is something that has been going on in the modeling field for a long long time. I'm not surprised to hear that people in the voice over field try to pull this as well. My daughter has done some modeling and I absolutely have to agree that you DO NOT or SHOUL NOT pay someone to hire you. Real agencies don't work that way, they get a percentage of the job they book for you. Companies that educate should stick to that. Glad to see you all are in agreement with that.

Hey Voice Coaches. I saw this and wanted to comment that this past summer I did a class with a company in Connecticut that did exactly what you are talking about. I admit the claim that they were a casting agency as a big part of my decision to work with them, but i did quickly find out that even though they do make professional work, i was at the bottom of the barrel so to speak.
I now can absolutely agree that though this company does do some casting, it is pretty clearly their method to get me to pay them for the service.
At this point I feel a bit "taken" but... I just finished my first VO job (that I found on my own!)

Keep Up The Interesting Stories!!
Love the web site!

Thanks Steve!

Stick with it and remember to try to get contact info and followup independently with everyone you work with. You never know where folks are going to end up.

Hello David,
Thanks to your course, I had a pretty sweet V.O. run on Time Warner. Unfortunately the producer that I was working with (and half the production and sales staff) were given their "walking papers" on Dec 31st. So I guess I'm also kind of a displaced 1099'er. Good luck,

Congrats on the new blog!! I have followed your site for the past two years after two people on your team were kind enough to give me some very valuable advice that helped me work around some misinformation I had gotten. These days I am fortunate to do voice work pretty regularly and I LOVE IT! The best part was that you all were willing to help me and i"m not even a Voice Coaches client!

Thanks for your help!

I had an opportunity to hear you speak at an actors convention in CA about ethics in training with people from the BBB, AFTRA, our Attorney General's Office and other acting professionals. I am excited to see you have added this new blog section. I appreciate your honesty and good humor and look forward to continued posts from you and your team.

Be Well
