VO Behind The Scenes: Star Wars

Posted 8:38 am by KikiVassilakis

Celebrity voices for GPS devices aren’t entirely new (in fact, one of Voice Coaches’ own students recorded an Elvis voice for a GPS about a year or two ago), but TomTom has decided to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back with a series of Star Wars voices for their devices. That’s right, now you can have Darth Vader, Yoda, C-3PO, or even Han Solo give you your turn-by-turn directions as you drive!

Well, in order to promote this cool new product, TomTom has put together a commercial video that features Darth Vader in the recording booth, trying to record all of the dialogue for the GPS. Usually, with VO Behind the Scenes, we try to share videos or interviews that give you great insights into what the recording process is like on various real-world projects. But while this is clearly a fictional recording session, it was just too much fun not to share with you all!

You’ve got to give credit to LucasFilm for having such a great sense of humor with their character for this ad, as well as to James Earl Jones, who gets to play off the usual Darth Vader persona and have a bit more fun than he’s usually able to as the Dark Lord of the Sith.

  1. This video is excellent, just hilarious! Although it would be a bit frustrating to be guided by C-3PO, lol.

That’s a soundalike, not James Earl Jones but a great imitation.
